I'd rather have a 5900X than a £450 5800x3D in fact I'd probably ***** the extra £100 over the 5800x for the 5950x

I have an R7 1700 so yeah I am the target market. someone that wants to upgrade their computer to a modern CPU.
 
The fact that the 5800X3D has no overclocking so it would mean a performance regression in some games vs the vanilla zen 3 makes it a tough sell IMO especially up against the original 5800X which will be over £100 cheaper or even the 5600X which is less than half the price.

Well no, not really. You don't want to upgrade your CPU to the de facto gaming CPU, you "just" want a modern CPU. Compared to your 1700 you have everything from a 5600X all through to the 5950X (motherboard permitting). You may want to stay with 8 cores, but you don't need a gaming powerhouse. You may want to move to 12 cores. Your budget may only stretch to 6 cores, but they are better cores.

You literally said yourself you're not CPU bound in games, and your workload would benefit from 12 cores. You don't want the very best gaming CPU specifically, so you're not the target market for the 5800X3D.
 
That's not what's been said. AMD have allegedly asked to remove overclocking. That's not AMD demanding and enforcing a removal of overclocking.
Asked is just a polite way of being told. AMD also removed the "unlocked for overclocking" on their own product page which is clearly there for all the other chips so there must be a good reason why they don't want this chip overclocked as AMD doesn't normally restrict their products.

And AMD asked vendors not use 16MiB ROMs and rubbish VRMs for 300 series boards, yet look what happened.

If there's something fundamentally wrong with the 5800X3D it can't be overclocked then fine - and you shouldn't have bothered then, AMD - but if it's "just" a case that thermals are rubbish or there's something up with power requirements, then I'm not sure why the vendors would lock out overclocking on their chunky-ass mental X570 boards. Plenty of power available and slap an Alder Lake-level AIO on it and you're fine.
 
5900X already has 64MB of L3 cache. I predict 5800X3D will only be marginally better on average. Nothing like 15%.
But it's still 2 lumps of 32MiB cache strung together via IO die. The entire point of the stacked cache is you get a shed load more cache directly in place. Yes, there is a latency penalty, but it's nothing compared to jumping across the IF.

96MiB cache directly on chiplet will be noticeably more performant than 64MiB cache split across two chiplets and communicating over fabric.

AMD have never locked down overclocking before on any AM4 ryzen or threadripper CPU so for them to do so for this CPU would imply they must have a valid reason and likely relating to the cache.
