How much has your council tax gone up this year?

Pretty sure licensing legislation dictates that fees are set on a cost recovery basis e.g. they can’t use the revenue to fund other services. The legislation will also set out the tests they have to perform which are fairly basic in reality.

They are cheaper because they probably benefit from large economies of scale. The more people apply there, the cheaper it gets. There isn’t really particularly strong reason why one authority couldn’t be responsible for the whole of England.

Social care.
It isn't though. Most of it is just spent by the council on paths, parks, foot bridges and regeneration.
Here's my Havant borough spending breakdown. Social care is only 10%

Council tax (band d) - £2,110.36

  • Havant Borough Council - £232.82
  • Hampshire County Council - £1,312.32
  • Hampshire County Council Adult Social Care - £220.92
  • Hampshire Police & Crime Commissioner - £261.46
  • Hampshire Fire and Rescue Authority - £82.84

4.99%. From £122 last year to £128 this year. Garden bin waste was free for as long as I remember but from April, it'll now cost £40 for the year to have the council empty it. This is an additional cost (if you want the bin collected) and not part of council tax increase.

5% last year and 5% this year. Luckily I'm a single person household so I get a chunky discount. About the only thing good us single folks get that is good.

What about all the free time, lack of moaning, and being able to walk around in just pants unjudged?

Is that not just the increase?

There was a Panorama episode yesterday about council's going bust and a lady from the council said the majority of the budget expenditure is social care, even though it is used by a small proportion of people.

Example of my council:

In total 47 per cent of our budget is spent on social care, providing support to 2.5 per cent of the population.

There has to be a better way to fund social care but I don't know what it is.

No that's the breakdown of our council tax.
I guess it depends on your area, how many old people, homeless people and whether there's any business investment bringing money in.

For example, our Havant area brings in £9.9m from council tax, but total council spend was £62m. With most of that coming from commercial activity. I assume car parks and business rates.
So I think it also depends how your council is massaging the numbers, and what proportion of your council tax they are allocating to social care. The numbers are certainly fudged. Just look how expenditure here happens to perfectly match what they're bringing in!

Here's the statement of accounts for your area. Your area is massively more populated, half a million. Way more spend that my area here in the south :)
Anyway, see if you can find social care costs in here.
