How often do you upgrade your CPU and Motherboard

Far less often than I did in the 1990s and early part of the 20th century - the generational gains now are far less impressive than they used to be. My last MB+CPU lasted me 7 years, with just 1 change of GPU from a 1080ti to a 3080fe

I used to alternate. CPU one year - GPU the next - then CPU and so on and so on.
I put money aside every month to have a fund to be able to do this from. Used to always see me in the latest hardware more or less. However with high end GPU costs going crazy over the last 5 or so years I am not able to do this now and im having to miss a year between each CPU and each GPU upgrade.

So it's now yearly CPU - Nothing - GPU - nothing - CPU and so on.

looks like IBM expects to be around for decades to come.

'sumers and their lil pc's. quaint really.

As a rule I change the platform when it dies.

there is a vendor culture that flips from gen to gen.

I like A 6-7 Year cycle, so tend to buy high end, and always Intel, to make it last.

My last update, 2 years ago, I decided to try a more balanced approach, as saw Skt 1700, was a 3 Gen socket, so went with an Intel 12600K/Z690 motherboard, with eye to grab a bargin a few years down the line for a 14th Gen CPU (14900K or 14700K). That plan went out of the window with the 13th/14th Gen issues, though the odds are small of a fault, they are still higher than normal, and so left me wondering will I break my normal cycle, and my Intel streak, and just go AM5, as guranteed socket until 2027, minimum, or stick with what I have and possible get a 12900K.

GPUs I tend to keep until they cannot play the games I like at acceptable quality, so that can be 4 years plus, at present on 8 years with my GTX 1070, the golden age of GPUs, but that will need to be upgraded, probably a 5070, though may splurge on a 5080 as would like to go 1440p gaming and the 1070 cannot handle it.

I answered this question before, but things have changed! It used to be, typically, every third generation. I am on gen 12 so was supposed to be gen 15. I have always bought intel, not wishing to face the learning curve associated with AMD. But what intel have just released has thrown everything in to doubt. I am not sure whether to delay my next "refresh" or go for AMD. I'm trying to work out whether there is enough of a performance increase to justify a new CPU right now, or whether I will wait another year.

CUDIMM has prompted me to think I should wait a little while. It's new and it will take a little while for things to settle and before we see AMD widely using the tech, but the performance wise it seems worth the wait.

If you are sticking with Intel I would be skipping the current gen. if you need an upgrade then I would be going AMD but saying that though it all depends on what you use your PC for

It's entirely for gaming.

The only reason I feel the urge to upgrade is because for three years I have planned on doing it now! Once I hit a date I was planning, it's difficult not to upgrade to something!!

I would have gone with the intel 15th as a matter of course, but after the disaster that is the 15th gen, I am more inclined to either wait or go to AMD. I'm interested in the 9800x3d. I would go for the 7800x3d but I am a little unclear as to whether the performance increase is enough at 1440p, and besides, despite it being amazing, it's getting on for two years old now.

AMD would be the best option then.

I am also holding out for the 9800X3D which is coming out next week (7/11/24) or seeing if there is any good Black Friday deals coming up this month.

I hadd to check but my last full upgrade was 2018 and that was for a used 1700x mobo/cpu setup from MM and it's done well.
Since then have only upgraded the gfx earlier this year and now going to give it a CPU upgrade to get a few more years out of it hopefully.
5700x3d seems a reasonable choice so will likely do that very soon.
