*** How to obtain a bike license ***

I don't know about you guys, but I would never move my bike around without sitting on it. On my mod1 I had the advantage of being a big lad so I probably had it leant over on to me more than I should but I took the opinion that it can't fall through me but it could fall away so I'll have it lean into me a bit.

Yup I don't like to move it off the bike either, especially not a bigger bike. If you can sit on it to move it, then why not.

I don't mind moving it when not on it,

thing I cant do though is leave it parked up in neutral,i always have to leave it in gear

Mod 2 booked for 27th - couldn't get it any sooner :(

Its in Shrewsbury instead of Wolverhampton. Anybody do their test at Shrewsbury? Whats the area like?

I think you're better of doing your test in a area you don't know. Stops you losing focus.

seriously tempted to get a 125cc license and get a grom! :) but.. I've got no garage/safe parking and live in croydon, any of you keep your bikes on the street? I have a front garden(not gated) and I could "take" the bike off street as such and leave it right outside the living room window but I wonder how safe that would be.. so what safety measures should I take to keep my bike in check? and during winter, cover it every night I assume? From the elements etc?

Almax IV Series chain with Squire lock
Xena XX15 alarmed disk lock
Oxford Stormex cover
Ground anchor if possible

I would cover it every night regardless, especially if you went for something like the Oxford Stormex as you can thread the chain through that, so you're effectively locking the cover to the bike - nice extra layer of protection :)

If you're especially paranoid, then a second disk lock on the back would be good.

Also, if your profile age is right, then go for a full licence. Opens up WAY more choice for when you want something bigger / quicker than a Grom and means you wouldn't have to re-take the tests if you did want something bigger.

awesome, thanks for response! :)

I was wonddering what I could chain it to! there's literally very little that I can use, a light pole might do?!

in regards to full license, yes I am 24 so I should be able to go from 0 to hero(full license)

wondering what's the best route?

reading this -;

http://www.artmotorcycletraining.co.uk/direct_access_scheme.htm

does the recommended sound about right? I'm quite good in traffic, filtering etc as I've been cycling for years in london so I know the basics, bar the obvious, bike width/weight/control - but confidence is there in regards to traffic, Which I'm going to assume is going to help me a little bit.

as far as starter bikes go, 125's seem to be the "thing" but they're too expensive for what they are imo and I'd prefer to jump straight to 400cc or 600cc - is that reasonable?

Anything solid will do really to lock it to. Ideally you need to make it so nobody can carry the bike away (which would be particularly easy with a nice little 125!).

That link sounds about right, although sounds expensive. I wouldn't expect to pay more than around £500 really for everything. Then again, it depends on your experience. I would book a couple of hours with your local bike school, so where you're at and they can hopefully estimate how much you'll need to spend. I would budget £1k all in, which accounts for potential failing of mod 1 and/or mod 2, additional lessons and other stuff.

So you'll need CBT, theory, mod 1 and mod 2, then you're sorted.

Nothing wrong with going for a nice 600 for your first bike. You'll get bored of a 125 quite quickly, especially if you commute on it. A plain Hornet or ER6, Street Triple or whatever isn't going to kick you off the back or anything like that, they're very forgiving and fun :)

dont you mean the almax series 3 craig? the 4 series is as heave as titanics anchor:eek:

600cc is perfect size imo

Depends on the use really. If it's just for chaining up at night, then the IV would be ideal. If you want to take it out, then the III is OK. Still not amazingly comfortable over a long distance, but fine for trips into town or whatever.

Looking to get my CBT done and was given a number of my friend's mate who quoted me £125 for the CBT and then £90 for lessons which come in blocks of 3 hours. Is this about right?

How many lessons should I be looking at booking after my cbt? I've not ridden a bike before, but have a car. Want to get my bike licence during this summer holiday window.

Bike lessons for what? You'll do your CBT and then you can get onto the road on your own, do you mean lessons on a 600+ or on a 125?

I had no lessons after my CBT, bought a bike and went out, best way to learn.

If you can't handle the 125 on your CBT, you won't get a certificate and you'll be asked to go back again.
