*** How to obtain a bike license ***

Congrats, what bikes are you lot getting when you pass?

I'd be looking at a SV650 or similar, any recommendations of a good bike that is restrictable to be in-line with A2 regulations? I'm 6"4 as well so I have to factor that into the equation when looking myself

MOD 1 passed yesterday with not a rider fault in sight :D
Considering how utterly crap my u turns were up until I spent an hour or so just hammering one after another last week I was a little surprised!

Well done I did the same. if your instructor is anything like mine the area you train in is made purposely harder for the slow speed stuff so when you get to the test centre it's easy as! :D

He done exactly that everything on the actual test pad seemed massively spaced out, he said he'd actually been pulled up in the past by one of the random visits for making it a little too hard in training.

SV650 is very good, I trained on a newish Galdius (naked sv650) and they have a swappable ECU that you just plug in to restrict it under the seat. Looks like a NES cartridge :p

I have the older carb'ed version SV and I love it. Great sound when you change the exhaust and good amount of poke without having to put it in high revs.

I had a friend who had an SV restricted to 36BHP so I'm guessing it will just be a different washer in the carb for the A2 requirements

£3200 is bit steep for an er6 don't you think?

id sell you my zx10r for £300 more:D

you'll pickup a decent er6 for under 3k,one with lowish miles some service history you cant go wrong

Honda hornet is another good choice

The cheapest on AT is 1.7k but just from looking at the pictures it looks rough, from there it jumps to 2.5k for an '08 model but from what I've read they had a facelift in '09 so I'd rather pick up a later model there is a private seller with a nice looking '09 for 2.7k it's just a bit of a journey away.

I've just booked next Thursday off so if all goes well and I pass I'll spend next Wednesday afternoon and Thursday riding around the local garages and seeing what they've got and seeing how far I can push my luck in getting some test rides on some different bikes.

Ryan, the SV650 is an excellent first bike, a lot better than the ER6N/F and cheaper too :)

Having read some reviews apparently it can be a bit cramped for taller riders, think my safest bet is going to be waiting until I know my final budget and going around local dealers to find one that feels most comfortable to me.

Might have a point there. I'm 6'1 and make the bike look like it should be bigger :D

4T5 is tall (6'5 I think?) and might be able to advise on some bikes to suit. I'm pretty sure he'll give you a list of bikes that won't work for you

Well my ER6F plans went out the window, spotted a SV650S on my web travels from a dealer not too far from home and I knew a guy at work rode one so I asked him very nicely if I could take it out for a spin round one of the industrial estates after work.

Loved it really nice ride, so I called the dealer and stuck a deposit down on a 2005 model going over at the weekend to see if I can knock him down a bit on the £1995 asking price.
From the pictures seems to be a nice tidy bike.

Just been looking around at luggage options for them as I'd quite like to be able to get away for a week or so in the summer, but they seem few and far between. Anyone got any experience with pannier kits for them, top boxes seem easy enough to find.

You made the right choice, it's a far superior machine.

I've ridden both for hundreds of miles, and I would quite like to own an SV650 again.

From what I've read quite a lot of people say they'd like to pick one up as a 2nd bike even after they've upgraded so they must do something right.

I've already been eyeing up some new shorty levers and a few other bits and bobs, I can see this proper bike ownership getting expensive :o:D

but its not a kawasaki:(

nice sound on the sv's aswell, though about a tank/cover and bag?

This one's got an aftermarket end can on as well so hopefully it'll sound even better.

I've looked at them but I'd like a fair bit of storage and I've never been sold on having a great big bag sat in the middle of the tank, I already wear a backpack and I'd like to move away from that as it's much nicer riding without one especially if I need to carry anything a bit heavier.

Surely theirs some panniers for the sv,might be expensive though,or even the saddlebag type

Not from what I've found, unless I fancy modifying the fittings from another model which I'd definitely **** up :D
The saddlebag style with a top box is looking like my easiest option.

Nice one, you won't regret getting an SV. I was going to say about an after market end can but I see that's already sorted. The difference is night and day with a different can on it.

The amount of SVs around here that don't have them is silly.....They all hear me coming though :D

Tip: Try not to open it up in 1st while getting used to the bike. The front comes up even at walking pace if you blip it too much
