*** How to obtain a bike license ***

quick few questions guys.

I currently have my restricted A2 license, and am eligible to go for A license in February. Am i correct in assuming it's just another Mod 1 and Mod 2? No 2nd theory test involved?

Also, is there anything stopping me from using my own bike? I understand I'll have to change the ECU to the unrestricted ECU once I get to the test centre.

Another thought that's just occurred, L plates required for test purposes?

You shouldn't need another theory, you already have that

Yeah you can use your own machine if its 500cc or more? Unrestricted and I think you need l plates still until you pass your mod2

Correct me if I'm wrong though anyone

Full 'A' licence bike needs to be at least 595 cc and 54bhp (40kw).

Category A (unrestricted motorcycle)

Category A unrestricted motorcycles used for tests must:

be a solo motorcycle
be at least 595cc
be at least 40kW engine power

Obviously you need L plates too.

You have an SV650 don't you? if so you're good to go, roll up with your bike, take off the restriction, slap on some L plates, and wheelie into the MOD1 area with the new found power :D

No theory test needed if you're upgrading within a class, i.e. A2 -> A

Ok, excellent. Yeah as below its an SV650 :)

Yeah, SV650, and ok thanks :) Will they require me to show insurance docs or anything? I'll take them anyway. L plates for Mod 1? or just the on-road Mod 2? Again, will just throw some on anyway :)

L plates for both :) using your own bike I think you need to show insurance certificate, either tax or MOT and your theory pass certificate.

Looking like the earliest I'll be able to do it is February half term :( Could try another company though and see what they say.

They're pushing me towards 2 days of Mod 2 training but they said the same about Mod 1 and I could have easily took that after 1 day. Hmm

Do you drive already? If so you'll probably get away with a little less Mod 2 training as once you've nailed how to actually ride a bike which you can if you pass your Mod 1 then it's more so just learning roadcraft for Mod 2.

Actually very easy. I ended up doing 2 days of training for mod 1 and really I think it would've been easily enough to do after one day. I was nervous before I got into the gated area but once in there and I saw how much more space I had compared to where I was practicing I found it very easy. Took about 10 minutes! I only had 1 fault and that was because I forgot to do a quick life saver before leaving the test area.

I'm now starting to question whether I really need 2 days mod 2 training as if it's just road riding then I already understand how roads work and would just need a bit of brushing up on bikers rules compared to my car rules. Due to it being in the instructors interest to make you book up an extra day makes me a bit skeptical if I really do need 2 days. Hmm..

Have you gone straight from no riding experience to DAS? It's not just the biker rules bit, it's stuff like taking junctions correctly (i.e. not swinging out on a tight junction) and stuff like that that is very different from driving a car. Have they done any riding with you on the road yet to assess how much training you need?

Yep, no road experience on a bike other than a 125 on my CBT and a hour or so last month when I did a conversion day.

The guy who said I would need 2 days road practice had only ever met me before taking me 10 minutes down the road to the test centre. Perhaps I do need 2 days but after being told that for Mod 1 and finding that very easy I don't know how much I should believe their claims. I'd definitely want at least 1 full day before a test. But 2?

He's probably playing it safe, using the average that most new riders need - if you had a few months of road riding then half a day or a day to tidy up any bad habits and generally get you test ready would probably be ok, but riding on the road is very different to doing the mod1 stuff, especially if you've not ridden a 600 on the road before.

The last thing you want is to only book a day and at the end not be up to speed and fail - 2 days for MOD1 and 2 days for MOD2 is pretty normal for a brand new rider, 4-5 days in total for a DAS course. You need to get used to the bike too.

For my DAS I didn't need much, if any MOD2 stuff working on (just a couple of things to sharpen up), but I still had a day on the road to get ready for the test - and I'd done 7000 miles on my 125, heavy traffic filtering/biblical rain/night time riding.

Then there's the test routes, a decent instructor will take you round some of the known routes and point out any tricky junctions/places the examiner will try and catch you out. There's a lot to cover and essentially (even though you're already a car driver) you're someone with virtually zero road experience on a bike.

Looks like 2 days it is. Just can't afford the £428 for 2 days and test that they want just yet. Think I'll do the same as Mod 1. Book a day training now and another day when closer to the test

That's about normal, is that 2 'full' days training? The test is £75 on it's own, so you're paying £175 a day - I'd expect a 4-5 day DAS course to be around £800-£1000.

I paid just over £500 but that was for 3 days training (which was actually 3 mornings, 8am-1pm each day, incorporating MOD1 in the 3rd day at 9am then MOD2 at 12:30pm the same day) which was the cheapest in my area, some places wanted £700 for 3 days of training!

Yep that's 2 full days and a test on the third day. currently thinking about 13, 14, 15th of February (Much to the girlfriends dismay :))

It's bloody expensive this learning to ride thing! But seeing as I'm over half way there I shouldn't give up

The learning isn't the expensive part, it's when you actually get the bike and start looking at all the nice gucci kit you can get that it gets expensive. I don't even want to add up how much my luggage alone is worth :o

It is expensive but so rewarding! :)

I can't wait for the day when i can wake up on a warm Saturday morning, jump on my bike and just disappear for the day or even weekend! :)
