*** How to obtain a bike license ***

Called them up today. I'll call another during my lunch.

They gave me two options:

£175 for 1 day training and the test fee - or £275 with 2 days training and test fee.

Earliest Saturday is 19th December :(

Assuming mod 1 is very similar to the CBT I found all the slow speed stuff pretty easy and didn't put a foot down all day. How much difference is it with a 600cc bike which probably weighs significantly more?

Has anyone else done a DAS with no real prior experience other than a 125cc CBT? How did they find the transition?

It's actually easier with a bigger bike, they're more stable due to bigger tires and the extra power being generated by the engine.

Think I might just go for the one day and test. If I fail then it's not really a big deal and just means I have to pay another £135 as the give you a discount if you use them again.

Slow speed stuff is easier on a 600, you don't even need to rev it, there's enough engine power to keep you moving just by feathering the clutch :)

How much time/how many miles have you done on your 125? I'd done about 7k miles/6 months and passed my mod 1 and 2 with less than 3 mornings of training.

My road riding experience comes in at about 2 hours :D Lol.

I'm basically a beginner I have no problems admitting that. Just I found the CBT very easy and straight forward. I think the only problem I had all day was doing a life saver without drifting left/right. Once I had that problem out of the way it was smooth sailing mostly. other than the occasional stall due to me not revving the hell out of the engine.

I'd like to think that a full day of training would be more than enough to get used to the weight and balance of a bike. As I said, I found the slalom, U-Turn and figure of 8 all pretty easy.

I had no experience other than being able to ride a push bike. Did my CBT on a 125, came back a few weeks later after my birthday did a morning practising mod 1, then on the mod1 day i did a couple more hours practising before the test. I then went out riding for a few hours with an instructor about a week before mod 2. Mod 2 day we got about an hour in before the test. It was all fine tbh.

Oh, a few years driving experience though undoubtedly helps with confidence on the road and knowing what people are going to do at roundabouts/junctions etc.

The ride back from the test centre after you pass feels great, most instructors will either say "right, see you there!!" or lead and then you follow - no following you like they do through the training.

My ride back from the test centre was MENTAL. My instructor was so stressy and rushed. At one point we were stuck behind a truck, so he overtook all of us, then overtook the truck at the first tiny opportunity and was off expecting us to keep up.

He would also stress out at us for using our brakes too early at a junction. To please him I had to be hard on the brakes coming up to it.

My instructor was interesting...!

Yeah I started to hammer it a bit :D:p was great not having to ride with an earpiece in.

it feels very strange when you first venture out on the road un assisted

its like your all naked

LOL when I 1st jumped on my CBR 600RR I was shocked at the steering ratio and how nimble it was, then I gave it a twist of the throttle over 10k rpm and I nearly pooped my pants whist grinning my ass off.

He might have had a touch of the colly wobbles

:D lol

Seemed like he just hated doing it. We would stop at Tesco for lunch on test day (mod 1 & 2) and all he'd do was moan about his boss and how much work he had to do. Then over the comms he'd just constantly stress out, never praising good riding.

The ex police biker I had a couple of times was way better, but only had him on CBT and first lesson :(

So glad those days are long gone. I didn't enjoy learning/lessons! Loved the biking bit, but couldn't stand being told what to do and constantly moaned at for hours on end

Ahh, my instructor was awesome, and the cheapest in the area! He couldn't half talk the hind legs off a donkey though!! We'd stop and get coffee in a mcdonalds and be there a while :D

I only paid £525 I think all in, for 3 days training, and it was 1-on-1 for 2 of those days.

I spent zero time on a 125 too, I was told to get on the er6-n, did some very slow speed stuff (moving 10ft then stopping, then moving 20ft and stopping etc.) I was then good to go). It helped that I'd had an hour or so on a big bike before doing my DAS.

Not booked that up :( Wanted to see how I get along with training first. If it's easy I'll book the first available date which might be some time after xmas

Tbh I wouldn't bother with any training now if you plan to do your tests after Christmas, you're better off booking 3-4 days together and doing training and tests in those days.

Whatever you learn Saturday, you'll need to re do again if you don't take your test for 2 months :(

It's very unlikely I'll ever get the time to put 3/4 days aside for it though. Unfortunately I'm going to have to do it in drips and draps. It sucks and I'll probably find it harder but such as life :(

There's a few days I can book between Xmas and NYE. If I'm not going down to Cornwall to spend time with the 'in-laws' I could get the test fitted in then.

Well that was very fun but it was also freezing which I think sapped away at my concentration after 7 hours of being on a bike. Going to book up another day and hopefully have my test before Xmas.

600s are so much more comfortable to ride than a small 125

Most important thing, did you have fun? As that's what it's all about! :)

Definitely not the best weather to be learning in though, what bike were you on?
