*** How to obtain a bike license ***

I was in the same position last year. I had initially planned on getting a 125 and using that for 6 months but that went out of the window as soon as I did my CBT. I found I got bored of the speed, or lack thereof, very quickly.

Did my CBT then the following month I booked my Theory and then cracked on with my direct access (I had to do mine over a few months due to work commitments). I think I had CBT > Theory > 2 x Mod 1 Training > Mod 1 test > 2 x Mod 2 training > Mod 2 test.

Passed it all first time and now I own a R6. In hindsight I think I could've got by with just 1 day mod 1/2 training - so depending how you get one you may find 1 day training ample enough

I want to ride a Zero electric bike they have new 11kw models so less than 15hp can I ride one of these with a CBT? http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/eu/11kw

If so then I assume I can just do the CBT on a moped without gears as I did a CBT few years back and while I got it I had no desire to use it as hated geared bikes and it expired. Then when I want a proper full power Zero SR then I imagine I can take a DAS auto bike course and ride the Zero full power version. Just seems so annoying that the legislation and tests have not caught up with technology for riding from my research.

Yep I can't see why not in terms of the cbt.

An auto full licence doesn't exist for bikes though afaik so you'll need to take your tests on a geard bike.

Found this after a quick google:

4/. Can I take my Direct Access Scheme on an automatic motorcycle?
Yes, but again there are issues with having a suitable bike. However, some of the major manufactures are now starting to make larger and larger scooters which will soon exceed 40kw (54bhp). Otherwise look for an old Honda CB750 Automatic.

Interesting. I knew there was one or two full sized bikes that were automatic but I'd never seen any mention of having an automatic restriction on a bike licence on the .gov site.

Hmm so I wonder if you can then technically take the DAS with a Zero electric bike as its over 67hp / 50 KW :D

Would there not be a restriction code applied to your license? Just like loads and loads of people have a full A license now but with the 79(tri) restriction?

You could take your DAS on an electric bike, but good luck finding a training centre with one! And AFAIK it's be the same as an auto car licence if you pass on an auto bike.

You'd be better off doing a full manual DAS, as you'll never be able to ride a manual bike otherwise, which will be more of a hassle than you'd think.

The 79(tri) is misunderstood by far too many people, just means provisional bike licence, can ride tricycles.

I have zero interest in riding a manual bike EVER so as long as I can take the test on an electric bike that I own that's awesome :D

Say what!?

I don't know if I could ever ride an automatic bike, same way I can't drive an automatic car. Good gear shifts always feel amazing!

I have a tesla on order and I'm a big fan of electric cars and bikes. I swapped my SMG m3 for a manual evo to get my gear fix for the moment :D

Agreed! My Dad keeps on about getting an automatic, but I could literally see myself falling asleep if forced to drive one. Being able to change gears is what make driving bearable :D.

Just that feeling of it hooking up perfectly and that extra little surge you get. Oooh they are the bits that make riding enjoyable.

We don't mention the times we get a change wrong though :p

:D

My left peg is bent in a bit which makes it a lot easier to hit N when changing up to 2nd. Especially if I'm opening it up and makes for a noisy experience

Oh I hate when that happens. Expecting to jump into 2nd a pull away but instead you end up revving loads and looking like a tit haha

I prefer automatic cars simply because of all the traffic. Also they change quicker and smoother than I could ever dream to.

So I've been a good little boy and finally managed to save up enough money to get through my CBT, DAS etc. Takes ages when you're on a bugger all salary

Got my CBT on Sunday but DAS will have to wait to next year as I haven't got enough holiday left so will look at getting that done early next year, dependant on snow / ice
