How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

Hey Guys,

Been messing around with my Sapphire HD 7850. I was running Furmark and system froze, all fans came on 100% and I got a blank screen. I had to hold the power button down to get it to restart and know the system doesn't detect the graphics card. Using integrated graphics at the minute.

The last settings I had it at, I believe, were core 1160mhz and 1.165v. I think memory was stock. Again it's a Sapphire HD 7850 (non-OC one). Max temps were about 72°C, fans on auto hitting just under 50%.

I've restarted the PC a few times, reseated the gpu, tried it in the other PCIe slot, took it out it back in the first one. Looked in BIOS for PCIe graphics etc. Device manager doesn't see it at all, not even a yellow triangle for an unknown device.

Any ideas?

Could you have fried one of your PCI-e power lines? May be worth trying a different one or a different PSU. First, clear CMOS and see if your board will detect it.

Hello guys, what AMD partner is the safest bet to go with in terms of getting a highly over clockable HD 7850? Sapphire, Asus, MSI, Power Color? Thanks. Also, I'm typing to you guys on my first desktop build. I over clocked a Core i5-3450 from 3.1ghz stock to 3.9ghz if one core is used and 3.7ghz across all 4 cores. This CPU shouldn't cause any sort of bottlenecking to the HD 7850 in crossfire, right? Also, I have 8gb's of 1333mhz ram.

Thanks.

I highly doubt that it'll bottleneck it.

And regarding GPU choice, its luck of the draw, some MSI Power Edition cards have been **** and some VTX/Powercolor cards have been great. All part of the silicon lottery unfortunately.

1) I used Unigine as it seems that if it's stable there, it's stable in real world scenarios.

2) It shouldn't be bad on the card at all, but if you're overloading the PSU that could cause some damage.

3) Overclocking the memory doesn't really do much in terms of fps, so 1350/1400 will be fine.

4) Not too sure on this one, but make sure you're using a quality 80 plus PSU.

Also, have you tried Asus GPU Tweak, as you can set 2D and 3D clocks in it.

EDIT: just realised you have a decent PSU, so thats fine. You can post your spec in your signature using the User CP button near the top.
Thanks so much, Sir.
I'd like to ask a couple more questions if you don't mind :
:)
I haven't touch the heatsink. I live in Jakarta right on the Equator line, so, do you think my 77C max temp is alright at 1150/1300/1175 daily oc?
Should I change the thermal paste? Any not too expensive thermal paste product can you recommend?

Thanks again, Sir. :)

77C is a bit toasty, but seeing where you live this should be fine. If you're worried about the temperatures, purchasing a custom cooler such as http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-060-AR&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=787 would give you the most benefit. 555BUK got a decent temperature drop (over 15C if I remember correctly) and managed to overclock a bit further.

I'm tempted to get a 1440p monitor, but don't know how well my 7850 will perform at the higher res.

From what I gather, AA isn't really needed at this res, so it kinda offsets the performance hit, but what should I actually expect comparing 1080p 4xAA vs 1440p no AA?

I have a U2711 (2560x1440) and I'm running it with a 7850 just fine. Indeed, AA is not needed at that res IMO. Just don't except to max out games, but you should be pretty close. For example, BF3 runs great at on high preset at great playable framerate. And don't forget you can always OC the 7850 and gain 20-30% performance.

If you replace the TIM (thermal paste) more than likely you avoid the warranty with the exception if it's a XFX product which than i think they still cover you.
At those clocks to reach 77c seems pretty normal if the temperature of your room is warm or you live in a warmer climate. Mine hit 72~ max at pretty much the same clocks. Mind you upping up the voltage is what really makes the chip warm. I think mine was at 1.2v

For your TIM question, I think Arctic Silver 5 and MX-4 are still the go-to-guys of computer TIM

I see, thanks for your timr. You've been very helpful to a noob :)

Warranty void? Then I hold on to what I have for now, maybe add a couple of casing fans. Thank you for your info :)

I've got another HIS IceQ on order, so will be going xfire. When installed will TRIXX treat both cards the same and use the memory; Voltage and core clock speeds that it is already set to?

Ok quick update .So I brought the GPU into a local PC hardware shop and they kindly stuck it into one of their machines and it was detected. They didn't have CCC drivers but it was detected none the less and they were getting a video signal from it.

I tried it again in mine since incase plugging it into their mobo "reset" it to default (from the OC'd voltage) but still nothing. Also deleted MSI Afterburner and ASUS GPU Tweak just in case the problem was the OC and they were loading it at the higher setting. Completely removed all ATI/AMD drivers and folders (even in registry) but that didn't help either.

Looks like it's my mobo (ASRock Z77 Extreme 4)? I don't have another card to test in it though.

Anybody any idea what happened to mycard in the post above based on the information given? I want to get back to OCing my GPU but am reluctant to do so until I figure where I went wrong the last time!

CMOS reset fixed it the last time.

Sometimes when I oc my card the computer crashes and gives me a hypertransport flood or some kind of error in the bios. I guess that's what happened to you, but the error wasn't recovered correctly.

have you removed all the CCC drivers too?

My head suspects you may have blown the pcie controller have you got another card or a mates card to drop into it?

try a linux live cd and see if that picks up the card then you can at least rule out the OS/drivers.

Here's my xfire results

Core: 1210
Mem Clock: 1450
Votlage: 1190
Max Temp in Trixx: 70 Degrees

Min FPS means nothing as it all depends when you hit F9 to start benchmarking. No Lucid or any other gubbins.

I'm still waiting on thermal paste to re-seat my cooler, but I've switched to Asus GPU Tweak 2.0.6 and it seems to be running perfectly stable at 1050/1200 @1.086V max temp in BF3 is 72C which is acceptable at 67% fan (auto)

I hit a solid 60fps pretty much everywhere, so I might leave it as is (FXAA high)
