How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

I reapplied TIM to both cards. This is what it looked like when I removed the shroud. I can't say I've noticed any temp difference after applying Phobya compound, but it was safer to re-apply some new stuff.

edit - whilst idle temps are the same, during load the card is around 10 degrees cooler from what I have seen so far. So I am very pleased. I guess that the liquid pro stuff would have been even better, but I don't have any of that TIM lying around.

using those mod drivers for the 7850 and any overclock eventually crashes with a purple screen

any ideas?

Uninstall em, Same thing here. I also have HIS card and I'm begining to wonder if any driver is completely stable.. overclocked or not. Gone back to amd_radeon_hd_7800_8.95.5_win7-64 for now to see just how they get on with no overclock or range enhancements or catalyst control panel at all.

Did you have any luck with the bios flash?

Do you have the bogstandard HIS card, or the IceQ 7850 ?

I'm going to reapply the thermal paste on my reference HIS 7850.

One last thing, what did you use to clean the stock thermal paste off ?

I have the IceQ. Most of the gunk on the card flaked off but the stuff that accumulated on the sides I took off with cotton bud and 99.9% Pure APC Isopropanol. You can buy the stuff in 100ml bottles from a well known auction site. It's much cheaper than the branded stuff and it does the job.

Average FPS I get in games with my Crossfire overclocked cards:

BF3 MP 48 Player Nosehair Canals Server - All Ultra, 4XAA, AP: High, AF X16 1920X1080p, MB:Off (Top)

Did you have any luck with the bios flash?

flashing to that popular asus bios failed

i tried flashing to HIS 7870 cause i figured if theres no way i can overclock this card through any other means i can at least get something from an upgraded bios flash.....

the bios said ti was successful but sure enough on my reboot BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP...flashed it back to 7850

this card seriously wants nothing to do with overclocking....

pretty sure im just going to return it and put my money towards something else

Hello!

I have a sapphire 7850 2GB, and I can't seem to overclock it past 1100 mhz without being unstable.
I am currently using sapphire Trixx, with the fan set to 50% fixed.

TRIXX only lets me up the voltage to 1.225, and I would like to go to 1.25 but none of the software I have found will let me go above 1.225, or the voltage control is just disabled. I have tried GPU tweak with extended overclocking, it still does not let me increase the voltage above 1.225 at all, same for MSI afterburner (even with unoffficial overclocking enabled) it will not let me even modify the voltage.

I wonder how many 7850's this thread has helped sell worldwide?

AMD should send me a nice present as a thank you. I'd like a GTX 690 please:).

1.225v is the BIOS limitation for the Sapphire cards. Sapphire also use a custom PCB so you probably cannot flash the BIOS to circumnavigate this limitation.

Okay, thanks!

Is there any way to get around 1200 mhz stable for this card, I have tried it at 1150/1340 and it is mostly stable, but the driver crashes every so often and sometimes has a pattern-crash that I have to reboot to get out of.

Speaking of drivers, are there any better drivers to use that don't crash as often when I try and overclock?

Not unless you are prepared to physically mod your cards voltage by soldering. 1100-1200 is the normal overclocking range for these cards, and to be honest there is very little real performance difference within that range.

So I've been reading this thread for the past hour or even more, and I'm more than certain the 7850 is currently best card for the £££ at the moment.
I'm looking to buy one by monday/tuesday, which is the best to choose from? (I'd rather not be fiddling with coolers etc; rather keep it as it came from manufacturer).
Thanks guys.

I've had 3, the best by far was the msi one, the cooler was a lot quieter than either my asus or His Ice Q one, as for overclocking, i didnt really try on the asus one, the his would do 1200 with very little volts but no more regardless to what I threw at it, my msi did almost 1300 but had to be maxxed out, my only issue with all of them was the noise and heat when overclocked (stock all were fine) depends on if your that bothered about noise, in the end i got a 670 windforce and to me the extra £100 I paid was well worth it for the noise alone lol.

But back to your question its a lottery as far as clocking goes as no two cards will be the same unfortunately

Yeah, I understand that no two cards will be the same, just I'm still a bit unsure weather to go for the MSI or ASUS. Noise isn't much of a problem for me really. Heck, my PC runs at 100% all the time, even on idle at around 25c. The surrounding I'm in is quite loud, so fan speeds etc isn't much of a problem.
Which was the best at keeping low temps at stock if you remember?

Also, I understand the GTX 670 is quite abit more powerful, but I'm only a mediocre gamer, not hardcore full MSAA etc;.

Also, I appreciate your very fast reply.

I only went with that card as it remains very quiet under load in comparison to my overclocked 7850's

There probably isnt much between the two, if it was me id probably go with the msi, out of the 3 I had the HIS had the best quality chip with 92% ASIC, which allowed it to do 1200mhz with relatively low volts but maybe my ears are over sensitive but I just found it too loud

There's a couple of HIS 7850's brand new on the bay, for around £160. What do you think? Should I go for it? What were the temp's like?

Little edit:
Just wanted to add I'm not too keen on products that aren't really big name brands (MSI, ASUS, GB), so I'm abit weary as to getting the "HIS" 7850.
Also, the fact its on the bay, doesn't make it very convincing :p.
I was considering a ASUS CUII at first, because of its large cooler, I would have though it would have kept the card nice and cool.

Just looked at that and I wouldn't touch the bay one with a bargepole tbh, they offer a 5 day return period and thats it, whats going to happen if it breaks after that, will HIS cover it??? Plus i presume you would have to pay to return it to germany etc

Also love the way in his advert it says the warehouse is outside of london, looks like the pics are taken in his kitchen :)

Indeed. Seems quite dodgy to me, I won't touch it. I like my stuff sealed anyway :p.
Do you remember your temps with the Asus/MSI?
It's just a battle between them two now really.
Thanks :).
