How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

My overclocks with CCC installed were significantly lower than without it. I remember strugging to get past 1150MHz until CCC was removed, and then the card went all the way up to 1275MHz stable with fan on 100%.

I think CCC somehow prevents voltage adjustments being applied, because 1150MHz was about all I could get on stock volts without CCC. My card has now gone to it's new owner (it was a new system build for a friend), so I cannot test further.

1200MHz/5800MHz was it's final 24/7 clocks @ 1.15v (CCC removed). New owner has been very very happy with it. His system was built for WoW and BF3, and the upgrade from a 4890 has been huge.

edited to say: My card did not like >1.2v. Even on low clocks >1.2v would cause slow downs. It seems that without CCC overvolt protection cuts in, but with it you cannot adjust voltages correctly. It would be nice if GPU had the slider to get around OVP.

Might give that a go.

I just have one issue with no using CCC - I use the presets with hotkey to swap between my monitors, as I don't use both at same time.

Any other option for me doing this?

if you're on windows 7, simply press the windows key + p (win+p) to switch between monitors

I've had some results when running the fan at 100%, 1200core, 5800mem and Volts at 1.22v. Very loud obviously but it'll do at least two runs of Heaven without bombing out, maybe more if left alone. the evidence points to some chips needing more volts than others and far better cooling then the reference coolers can offer. I think there might be some "localised" areas on the gpu getting too hot but that is pure speculation on my part.
Give those figures a go and see how you get on.:)
Thats on a VTX 7850 btw

Thanks, i will experiment a bit more with mine when i get home.

The card is really good, I am disapointed with the stock cooler however, really should have got an MSI.

Has anyone watercooled one of these cards yet?

Is there more than one version of the MSI 7850 Frozr? I'm trying to find the best deal having more or less decided on the MSI HD 7850 Twin Frozr III...

I only seem to be able to get 1100/5348 for 1.190v. No where near as good as some of you guys have got.

Mine is the reference VTX model and it is getting to 80+ degrees and is very loud at this clock. I have tried higher voltages but that just pushes the temp higher and I can't really get a higher clock. Shame.

I think the noise may be a bit much for me, what do you guys think about watercooling this card with a GPU only block?

I'm in the same boat as you Rich.

Mine won't do 1050 at stock and needs a fair bith of voltage to do 1100-1150. At which point the temps increase (Mine is 50 idle as I use 2 monitors - although will try the windows key + p trick to see if I can just run 1 montior and switch between the two) and goes up to 80+. Add to that a loud fan which I would say at a speed above 65% is annoying even when gaming with a headset I just don't think its worth it.

I'm trying to decide whether to return under DSR given the potential reduction in prices coming up on the 7950/7970. Hard to make a decision. Will be having a play over the weekend and awaiting new AMD prices before I make my decision on Monday.

I think if I was buying again I'd have to seriously think about a non-reference cooler and they can be had for £208 so the extra £26???? might be worth it for a single card but if going CF the VTX cards would probably be alright at lower clocks.

If you don't like the noise now then return it under DSR, it'll only annoy you more as time goes on.

I think personally the extra outlay is worth it for the better cooled version (Sapphire/MSI), the coolers really are far superior to the stock one. Much better temps with lower fan noise.

Not being able to do 1050 on stock volts is a big indicator you got a poor quality gpu.

Hex love your build and massive oc on 7850. Your doing good man.

Thankye ^_^

I want to buy another sapphire for crossfire

2 x 7850 @ 1150 :D

Thats what I've been pondering:) saying that, I've been having a go at Crysis2 and I can now run Ultra settings with high res textures and it very rarely goes below 40fps. These settings were impossible on my old unlocked 6950. I might get a copy of BF3 and try that out.
