How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

Which drivers are you using? I find it odd so many people are having issues with unlocking the ranges and OC'ing...

I litterally just slapped on the 12.4 Betas, installed the CAP 12.3's, installed ASUS Tweak, put it in advanced mode, unlocked the ranges, rebooted and OC to 1200+...

No messing at all... =/

So, which cards seem to be the best overclockers?

None, they are all the same it would seem

Originally we thought VTX, but a lot of forum members are getting pretty much the same overclocks as the others.

Sapphire and MSI have better coolers so might be best to get one of them

Personally, I would get an MSI

Maybe the paste hasn't settled in yet?

Paste doesn't really cover a 15C difference in load temps... looks to me like it isn't seated properly, or your case has really bad airflow...

There's a few others with the MSI and Sapphire in the original 7800 thread and all got temps similar to mine... i.e. high 50's under load at stock clocks.

I'm using 2.0.6.0 for GPU Tweak ( Same as 555BUK ) and the drivers are off the disc. I hit apply but the clock stays at 860.

*Edit* Maybe it's the drivers off the disc causing the problems ?

Try hitting Apply, the hit Save, and then click one of the 4 profile buttons which appear briefly velow the Save button. You have probably not saved the profile.

As far as best overclocking cards so far:-
*MSI seems best for average overclocks.
*VTX/Powercolor are hit and miss. Some are very good, some average, some poor. My guess is that these chips are not speed binned and you get plain luck of the draw.
*Sapphiire seem lower than average, but perhaps I have missed a few posts.

Quick update-

Reinstalled latest drivers and GPU tweak and it registers my input properly now. Bad news is that 1200/5800 @1.15V causes Unigine to crash from a fatal error only a few seconds in :( what settings can I try next ?

Well, I'm a bit stumped as to why my temps are so high.

I've tried it in the slot nearest the top (upside down motherboard layout), and the temps increased by about 3 degrees.

I've flipped the PSU around so that instead of drawing air from the area where the GPU is, it is now drawing it from the room, which caused it to drop by about 2 degrees.

I've taken every side panel off so that theres as much ambient air as possible around it, and I've whacked the front 180mm Air Penetrator fan onto full.

The end result is that the GPU still manages to reach 70 celcius when under load at stock clocks. Idle temps are roughly 27-28 celcius.

Any ideas guys?

Just thought i would chip in with some results for my over-clock, the more data the better. The results are OK-ish, not as good as the other people in this thread but i guess the quality of the chips vary.
On a Sapphire with dual-x (not oc version) with 12.4 beta drivers (No ccc) and 12.3 CAP

1125 core & 5200 memory on 1.075 mV (stock)
1100 core & 5400 memory on 1.075 mV (Also stock)
1175 core & 5400 memory on 1.135 mV
1200 core & 5400 memory on 1.160 mV
1250 core & 5400 memory on 1.225 mV

As you can see, i did not clock the memory very high, this is because it seemed to fail more if i got both the mem and core high, so i often traded 200mhz on memory for 25 mhz on core, but i guess thats just a consequence of my chip not being a top pick.

Anyways, i just thought i would share my results, more data is always good.
If anyone is intrestrested in the heaven 3 results for these clocks i've collected them all in a zip at
gfx.zip

Start upping the volts by 0.01 until you get a full loop done.

1125 core & 5200 memory on 1.075 mV (stock)

Good core clocks there, shame about the memory, but the core is the most important anyway :)

Well, I'm a bit stumped as to why my temps are so high.

I can only assume your cooler isn't seated right. Might be worth taking the card out and giving it a look over to see if you can see anything amiss. Should deffo not be hitting the 70's at stock.

Here's how it went on Unigine:

1200 Core & 5800 Memory @ 1.15v = Crash
1200 Core & 5800 Memory @ 1.15v = Crash
1150 Core & 5800 Memory @ 1.15v = Crashed after few seconds
1100 Core & 5400 Memory @ 1.15v = Got all the way through.

Thing is I don't understand what levels of voltage I need. I tried 1100 Core & 5400 Memory @ 1.00v but it crashed halfway through so upping it to 1.15 helped tremendously. Do you reckon I have any more room to go up and what settings would you suggest I try ?

*Edit* Just saw your post HeX, i'm on it :)

Might be worth leaving your mem at stock until you get your core clocks where you want them. Just to rule it out as a problem.

Try this:

1150 core
4800 memory
1.195v gpu volts
fan speed at 50%

That might confirm a heat issue.

save that in a profile, give it a whirl and see how it goes. I can do 1200core, 1.220 gpu volts, and the fan at 100%, but I can't stand the noise and the overclock is "flaky" sometimes it'll pass, others it'll crash.

Got a Sapphire O.C. edition coming tomorrow!.

This is my first amd/ati card since the 9800pro and im really looking to see what it can do.

Can someone please tell me what CAP is??.

Loving this card so far. ASUS HD7850-DC20-2GD5.

Gets to around 65c in Heaven @ 45% fan speed which audible but not intrusive. Now to test real games for stability.

I tried doing exactly this and it hasn't worked at all, still can't get over 1050. The little padlock next to the GPU clock speed is "unlocked" as well. Rebooting and installing/uninstalling CCC hasn't helped at all either. Anyone else in the same position? I've got a sapphire by the way.
