How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

for the first time i ran unigine as a benchmark (before didn't know how to). i have mine at 1200/5800 and it only scored 1300. seems low, no? i5-2500k processor.

Hey guys, just as a heads up, don't use the official 12.4 drivers. AMD locked the clocks back to 1050/5800. Keep what you have now. I'll post my benches latter, but my Sapphire was only able to hit 1175/6000. Fair enough though I guess. I was pleased to break P7022 in 3DMark 11. Of course part of that was do to my 4.8Ghz i5. Graphic score was 6723. Its posted on reddit if you desperately want to see it.

Most of us try to keep 24/7 voltages under 1.2V, you are fine past that. But temps go up quickly.

Hey guys,

Well I'm now in a quandary thanks to this thread! :(

I've just upgraded to from a GTX470 to the GTX580 (both MSI Twin Frozr IIs) but the 580 is just so darn loud & hot, even in the game menus it ramps up and runs hot & noisey. Its also getting to 75-80c within 10 minutes of playing.

So, I read the whole thread and I'm thinking to myself that one of these running stock is better than my old 470? and also OC'd will be similar to my 580? but I'm just a little concerned about running an OC 24/7 for gaming & lowering the life span of the card?

Also, the 580 is a really juicy, so do you guys think, even with an OC to match the 580, this 7850 will still use less power, be quieter & run cooler than the 580? (I'm looking at getting the MSI Power Edition)

Lastly, even though an OC'd 7850 will match the 580 in benchmarking tests, do you lose anything due to the 580 being a higher spec'd card, i.e cores, processing threads etc.. will I ever be using it for something and suddenly notice its not really as powerful?

Cheers peeps :D

Hi.

After reading the first few pages of this thread, I decided to buy one of these cards to replace my old 5770. I went for a Sapphire. Unfortunately, it turns out that the one I got was not overly stable when overclocked. I can't get it past 1150 MHz on the core and 5800 on the memory without it becoming unstable. I can't even get it to 1050 on stock voltages.

But that isn't the problem. When I'm gaming or running a benchmark with this card, there is a noticeable screen ripple effect. Kind of like this, but less extreme. I think it's more noticeable when the card is overclocked, but it's there even at stock. I didn't notice it until after I overclocked, but it isn't very noticeable in bright games like outdoors in Crysis and BF3 which is what I tested it in. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it some kind of damage caused by overclocking? Is it anything to do with my using a DVI to VGA adaptor? Thanks.

Billy

I have a Sapphire 7850 OC edition and I like several others here was unable to get the clocks to unlock. I found a new edition of Trixx yesterday and I have successfully oc'd past 1050mhz. You can get the newest version 4.3.0 here https://www.sapphireselectclub.com/ssc/TriXX/TriXX.aspx

UPDATE: I just realized that to the right of GPU and mem clock there is a slider and if you go down, under Board Power Li is VDDC so you can control voltage. Trixx is working flawlessly for me and i know longer have to mess with gpu tweak

I would check connections or adapter

nah, you would be fine with it overclocked as long as you keep temps down. Am thinking of getting the 7850/70 for my HTPC

I tried changing the adaptor, but I still have the problem. Should I try using a DVI cable? My monitor does have a DVI input, but I used a VGA cable with an adaptor because I didn't have a DVI cable spare.

i feel like my score is low...is it? this is at 1200/5800 on a sapphire 7850 OC edition...

unigine.jpg

i ran it stock and it got 42fps, and then at 1150/5800 and it got 50fps. does this look okay? just seems other people are posting much higher 54-55fps numbers with a similar 1200 core clock.

That scores about right for the clocks you've got mate. I've noticed that theres a bit of variation with some scores with the hardware at roughly the same set up. I think this probably down to the individuals personal pc, how old the windows instal is, apps running in the background, etc.

This allowed me to increase past 1050, but does not allow for voltage increases yet. So to increase voltage and clocks first you must increase voltage with GPU tweak and apply it. Then go into Trixx and increase your core and mem values and apply it. Verify with GPU-Z you have increased voltage, core, and mem and you're good to go! I am stable at 1200 core and 1450 mem at 1.176 volts. I hope this can help some of you

Hi all - yet another first time poster here (just how many new members is this thread responsible for I wonder)! I registered to mention the new Trixx version, but you beat me to it Twerk. For the record, I have a stock Sapphire 7850 that has got to 1050/1450 at stock volts just fine. With my stock i5-2500k, this sees a fps increase in Crysis:Warhead and Batman:AC of 18%, and in Skyrim of 13%. Twerk - have you used the Trixx OC area's scroll bar? There's a voltage slider at the bottom (tho' I can't promise it works). And is there any reason the 12.4 Cats are inferior to the 12.3 Cats for our purposes Azov? The latter restrict clocks in the same way, no?

Edit: Well this _is_ odd. Trixx GPU clock slider has a 1200MHz limit. Amazed that I could get to 1150MHz without a voltage increase, I fired up OCCT to check stability. After 20 mins and no errors, I resumed my slow but steady GPU clock increases. Somehow, the Trixx slider's limit is now 1700MHz! Reminds me of how 'unlocking' ASUS GPU tweak also 'unlocks' the CCC Overdrive sliders. But I've reinstalled Windows since last messing with the ASUS app. Seems like OCCT has somehow affected Trixx!

Ooh - looks like I've reached my stock voltage max GPU clock. Running 3DMark11 benches at 1190MHz reset the display driver, while 1180MHz did not. Given 1150MHz was OCCT-stable for 20mins, I am stoked! Was uneasy about increasing voltage, and looks like I may not have to!

I used to have that problem, I switched from a VGA -> VGA->DVI adapter to a normal DVI cable and that fixed the problem :).

If that's at stock clocks you might have a faulty 580 TF II. Did you set a custom fan profile for it with Afterburner, or is it on auto?

You could try using Dxtory (google it) to set a framerate limit which will stop the gfx card rendering at 100+ fps in menu screens.

I've no idea if Dxtory would cause any issues with Trixxx, etc...though.

cool man, though i didn't think you needed to run it all night. 30 minutes max is probably good. i mean, how long do you think you'll play BF3 for? and it's not as distressed a program as unigine.

i also got mine to 1.176 @ 1200/5800 with the sapphire OC. though my temps are WAY lower, maxing around 68c. but your temps are fine. i accidentally ran a bench with fan at 10% and my temps only got to 86c. though these coolers are awesome, but maybe your case has poor airflow?

btw, i have tried 1200/6000 @ 1.176 and it failed, so VRAM definitely needs some power increases from time to time.

No need to run all night, give it an hour and then play some games.

hi, i'm a new member too, this is an awesome thread, thanks to all who contributed. I have my sapphire OC edition 7850 at 1200/5800 with 1.175V too. Just wanted to share some xperiences and help some people out too while i'm at it.

After I updated to the new 12.4 catalyst, it just kept crashing out of heaven even at 1.185V with 1200/5800, so yeah the 12.4 catalyst maybe weakening overclocks? I don't really know... lol.

But I wanted to help out those who's video card is spiking in performance and had no problems in the first place. The reason why your video card is spiking is cuz I read somewhere, the gpu monitor is refreshing values so your card spikes every interval, so in order for your card to not be spiking, you must not open any sort of gpu monitor. I',m not sure if thats the case for everyone, but it works well for me, I just turned asus gpu monitor to not start.

I did a Heaven benchmark at 1150 MHz on the core and 5800 on the memory, using what appears to be the standard Heaven settings (4x antialiasing, 4x anisotropy, normal tessellation, shaders high), and I got about 50 fps. Am I correct in thinking that I'm being held back by my processor, an AMD Phenom II 955 BE at stock 3.2 GHz? I'm hoping to get a nice 25% overclock on my CPU when I get an aftermarket cooler, and I'm hoping something like this would increase my fps in Heaven.
