How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

Not sure what has gone wrong here, After getting random crashes in heaven @ 1150 core and 5200 mem and volts @ 1.20v I went back to my stable heaven overclock @ 1100 core and 5000 mem and all I keep getting is random crashes, Basically the amd driver reports that it has recovered from a crash.

Not sure why heaven keeps crashing after being stable all the way up to 1150 :confused::confused:

just got my shiny new msi twin frozr 3:D

How are you finding the Msi thus far Wazza? I have the Msi too and found it great on stock volts upto 1100, Though starting to have crashes in heaven now that I have reached 1150, Even @ 1.20v it crashes heaven.

What are your overclocks like at the moment? In the version of ccc that I have it goes all the way to 1800 mhz and 2400 mhz on the mem clock.

Im kinda dissapointed with my 88.9% ASIC quality ( the highst ive seen so far) Gigabyte windforce 7850, could only able to overclock upto 1180/5400 at 1.225v stable. However im satisfied with it coming from a gtx 460 SE. I believe at 1180 core ,this surpass a stock gtx 580 which im quite happy with. With its windforce cooling im just gona put this overclock as 24/7.

..and then she just died

It was fun having the fastest 7850 on the planet for a few days, but now she is dead. It was a strange death, and she certainly wasn't stressed at the time. I foolishly attempted to install the latest GPU Tweak for the second time. The first time I tried installing it I got instant screen freezes when attempting any kind of overclock. I rolled back to 2.0.6 and all was fine. I decided to give it a second go today. Install went okay, but then I opened GPU-Z.

GPU Tweak 2.1.24 + GPU-Z = Black Screen of Death.

Upon reboot, my motherboard refuses to recognise the card (no BIOS prompt) and gets stuck at error 62. I removed the card and can boot via my 2500K's iGPU okay, so I set iGPU to Primary, reinstalled the 7850 and attempted to re-flash the BIOS. BIOS flashes fine (so card is recognised by DOS), but the 7850 just will post a display output.

Also, using iGPU as primary display allows me to get into windows with the 7850 installed. Windows recognised the HD Audio from the card but CCC cannot see it and I get driver error.

It is almost as if the firmware (something other than BIOS) has been corrupted. I have inspected the card and there is absolutely no physical damage. It was not killed by heat or overclocks because it was running stock at the time (I had just installed GPU Tweak and hadn't tweaked yet).

My initial guess is that something with my flashed ASUS TOP BIOS has clashed with my Powercolor reference card, GPU Tweak, and GPU-Z. Some code other than BIOS has been corrupted and my card is no more.

WARNING
Do not flash cards to the ASUS TOP BIOS and use GPU Tweak 2124 with it. Something in this tool seems to have killed my card!

If anyone has any ideas, please post. Now I have to roll back to my EVGA 680.

:eek::eek::eek: WOW sorry to hear that mate! I assume the Bios flash was the culprit and that using asus tweak alone will not bork the cards?

A shame as your card was the elephants danglies, Be interesting to hear how many others have flashed to the asus bios, I hope all is not lost and you can recover the card somehow!!??

There must be more than just BIOS that can be read/written from these cards because things like ASIC quality remain the same after flashing. Perhaps there are some non-writable areas within the BIOS that got whacked?

its ok,my 5870 vapor x scored 900 points so its not far behind, but no way i could max the sliders in ccc unlike this card

its running 1050 mhz core and 1450mhz memory on stock voltage, tbh i dont think ill even bother clocking higher, its faster than my old card and cooler and thats all i wanted

cant believe its this powerfull running on a single pci-e 6pin

Well having won a 680 I'll be selling my MSI 7850. Wish I didn't have to so I could push it as far as possible as it seems a pretty good card from what I achieved! Never had the balls to push it too far! Was good to own it whilst it lasted though!

My sapphire 7850 arrived today and I must say the size of the thing really surprised me. It's about 2/3rds the size of my 260 and the one power lead is a real nice touch.

So I tried my hand at overclocking my XFX 7850. Core: 1200, Memory: 1450. Sadly I need to bump up my voltage in order to obtain that.

Dunno if that's a good OC really.

A few quick questions if anyone could help :D
1.) Gigabyte card or MSI card?
2.)Does Afterburner and Gigabyted software (trixx?) work to get these overclocks?
and...3.) whats the best stable and safest overclock past 1050mhz? (what fan speed, etc.)

thanks :D

1.) MSI (better cooler I believe)
2.) I use TRIXX since AB couldn't clock as high. But I've not tried the new beta yet.
3.) They're all pretty much guaranteed to do 1150mhz. 1200+mhz with voltage tweaks seem to be widely possible.

My MSI 7850 TF III OC arrived today and first thoughts were how small it looked. Will install tomorrow, take a few photos during the process etc and then down to business and see what it can do.:D

its a good card,i have my fan set to 47% over that it becomes audible, havnt seen temps go above 65 in heaven,56c was the max in dead island, playing for hours and thats at max clocks in ccc
