How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

in the US, the 580 is still well over $400 USD, with the 7850 still in the $250 USD range. the 670 is the best card for the money right now. if i were in the UK, i'd buy the 580 if it's the same price as the 7850.

The 580 that has been mentioned is a refurb and it states that it is for the card only. Refurbs normally have 90 days warranty iirc.

I am in the UK and I'm starting to think that this is the way to go. :)

2Gb Vram is nice, but OC headroom etc does not matter -its all about bottom line performance. 10-15% is decent margin, but 580 can be OCed to stretch this even further. So Vram is the only niggle - but its is a niggle, no denying...

THis one has one year warranty.

It swings from game to game. At 1920x1200 the 580 is slightly faster than a 7870 overall. For a 7850 to match a 7870 it needs to run at about 1075-1100MHz. To match a 580 1200MHz on the 7850 should be enough.

1200 should be enough but it wasnt enough in the test ;) http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-radeon-hd-7850-power-edition-oc-review/21

In your chart, 580 looks to have just too much a gap between itself and 7850 as well. Plus, once we factor in that even 1200 OC for 7850 is anything but a given... I think I've convinced myself :D

My MSI has come , asic of 72.7 , no Haribo though :-(

I have an odd problem, paint shop pro wont load with it installed, was same with the vtx 7850 i had as well, maybe an ati problem? worked fine with a gtx 570 and 560 in ,hmmm.

The link you quote shows the 7850 beating the 580 in 3DMark11, but losing in AVP. Overall scores look pretty close to me, but just two benchmarks is nowhere near enough to judge. Who gives a monkeys about AVP or 3DMark anyway:). Oh, and AVP is not a game that favours AMD because the 680 beats the 7970 clearly.

I just installed some decent case fans and now I can hear my HIS's gpu fan. Put it at 25% up to 40 degrees now. It's currently sitting at 38 degrees idle in this hot weather we're having atm.

@Balb0wa - Nice pics. You a pro photographer?

set your fan to 45% 33c here,normally 26-28c

I had it at 40% before and I couldn't hear it, but since I changed the stock 650D's fans to some Scythe's it was audible. Whilst browsing I like the PC to be quiet, but the fan profile increases to 45% during gaming temps and the fan noise won't bother me as much as I use a headset.

Not sure if this is good or not, all i altered on heaven was the res to 1920x1080

This was 1201 on the core and 5496 on memory, stock volts.

Couldnt get that on the vtx 7850 i had, would crash 10-15 secs into it.

Wonder how the MSI's have a low ASIC if there supposed to be the "highend" 7850's?
Pure luck of the draw. Nobody seems to be cherry picking 7850 chips. It doesn't matter which card you buy whether you get 65% all the way through to 92% (current highest). I have seen the cheapest VTX cards with mid 80's, whilst some of the most expensive MSI's are low 70's. There is simply no way to guarantee a good ASIC, but fortunately even lower quality chips clock well.
