HP LP2475w, IPS 24" Official Thread! (Now Available from OcUK)

Hi All

I've just bought one of these monitors and its the latest build / firmware and I was suffering dreadfully from the dreaded green / pink tinge.

About to RMA it to Overclockers which is causing me a dilema (ie what to get instead - an Eizo s2242w?, about the only other monitor I'd consider). Added to this when it's displaying photo's or games it looks just phenominal and I've been trying to live with it.

However, it seems odd that different people experience this to different degrees. Sure, some of that will be perceptual but not all so I've done a bit of fiddling and come up with the following to try and fix it.

I've fiddled around with the calibration which does help but I couldn't dial it out. I've left the screen on since I got it last Saturday as well so around 100 hours on the backlight which has also helped but still not to an acceptable degree.

It seemed odd as well that all the professional reviews didn't note this problem. Now HP could have ensured that all the reviewers got plum monitors but this seems a little far fetched. It was more likely that the review monitor gettting shipped around had plenty of burn in time on the backlight but this couldn't account for the whole issue as some people are reporting this issue after 400-500 hours run time.

That got me thinking, what could be different about people's set up that would make such a difference to the output. I also remembered reading somewhere that the uneveness may be down to a low quality DC converter on the backlight. Then it clicked - what can upset sensitive electronics? Magnets. What has magents in them? Speakers. What do a lot of people (but not all - particularly pro reviewers) have either side of their monitor? Yep, speakers.

So, I shifted the speakers. Result, a much more even screen, it improved after a minute or so and has been getting better ever since. Not perfect, but acceptable now and an RMA seems less likely.

If anyone is having the tinted issue try moving the speakers and post back the results. If anyone who doesn't have speakers close to the monitor but is having big issues with this please post also.

Thanks all.

Great first post, welcome to OcUK :)

I'm looking at buying this monitor myself soon, and I'm hoping if you're right that the magnetically shielded logitech z5500 speakers shouldn't cause this issue.

I'm using magnetically shielded speakers but it the shielding isn't good in the monitor itself this may not be enough. Yes, it is like back to the old CRT / non shielded speaker days but it makes sense.

I really have noticed a massive difference since moving my speakers wsell out the way. The monitor is now usable which is great 'cos the picture quality is to die for when its behaving itself. All TFT's have some flaw or another, it just depends what you can live with...

Cheers

Extremely tempted to take the plunge for this monitor.

Have a Dell 2405FPW which I think is on its way out, it's nearly 3 years old and the motion blurring is becoming more and more noticeable; if in a game of HL2 and spin 360° for example, it looks like I have low FPS, however it's just the choppy blurry screen :(. Also it seems quite susceptible to picture burn which I never noticed before.

Can get this HP right now, for roughly £350 delivered brand new. Should I do it :o

The devil on my shoulder is saying my current screen isn't doing my system any justice, and having my old 24" screen by my bed as a TV would be awesome

The other argument is that £350 is a lot of money to spend on something that replaces a 24" which seems to work fine-ish, and I doubt I'd get much for the 24" if I sold it on.

arghh!!! How can I stop myself? lol

Would it be worth chucking on a ferrite core to see if it improves any?

Hey all,

Copied this into here.. offical thread

Just Purchased an HP LP2475w, all calibrated now, very nice!! Recommend!!

But, I tried PS3 via HDMI, HDMI to DVI and Component and all my 1080 games look great, except for Grand Theft Auto 4.. which looks awful and blurry, doesn't matter what I do in image control.

PS: I also forced the ps3 to only output in 1080 mode.

Anyone else have this issue or... have any suggestions?

Ben.

I got my HP LP2475w (firmware version: GIG 068) on Friday afternoon, delivered direct from HP themselves for £383, so I've had the whole weekend to use it.

I bought it because I wanted a larger, higher quality monitor to replace the 22" Dell E228WFP one I had. I'm not a professional user, I'm just a PC gamer who wanted the best display I could get for around £400. Until this new monitor I've always had TN panels which tend to have poor viewing angles, purplish looking blacks and washed out colours.

I'm happy to say that I'm delighted with the HP monitor. The image quality is outstanding IMO with vibrant colours and amazing sharpness that I've never seen on any of the previous monitors I've owned. The default settings weren't so great though - the brightness was way to high for starters - but I used the ones from the TFTCentral review (which is what convinced me to buy the monitor) and it now looks nigh on perfect to my eyes. I have a Core i7 920 PC with GeForce GTX 280 graphics so it was a natural upgrade to move up to a 1920x1200 screen. I'm loving the extra desktop space too... only snag is having to redownload all my favourite 1680x1050 wallpapers in the new size of 1920x1200! :)

If I have one complaint about the screen, it's the oversized base which means that I can't push it back as far as I'd like. Being an H-IPS panel, the frame is much thicker than I've been used to with TN panels but it has lots of connections and is very well built. It oozes quality.

No dead pixels either and I haven't noticed this pink to green shift on white backgrounds either that I've seen others mention. I'm slightly colour blind anyway so it probably helped!!!

Nearly forgot... I installed the HP Display Assistant software off the DVD that came with the monitor and updated it with the newer version straight after. Upon clicking on the Update link from the main window I was taken to a browser window that claimed the software was now up to date but that there was a new firmware available to download for it.

I have download and installed this HP DA Firmware Updater but have not yet ran it with the USB lead connected because I just wanted to know whether (a) there actually IS a new firmware out later than the 068 one I have; and (b) whether it's worth actually updating in the first place? The only thing I've noticed wrong with the current firmware is a silly spelling mistake in the Scan button menu which reads "Currect Input" instead of "Current Input". Not a big deal admittedly but a little shoddy all the same that no-one has picked it up yet despite there having being a few firmware updates.

I've tried the firmware updater without success, followed the readme instructions exactly but after an attemt to flash update a message says my monitor is not connected to the usb lead :s

So with the updated firmware do people rate it well now? Is the pinking and SRGB vs AdobeRGB issue fixed?

I'm going to need a wide gamut screen in the near future by the looks of it as I'm looking at getting a pro printer too so for proofing it would come very handy.

I haven't seen any pink to green tinge on my screen but, as I said earlier, I'm am very slightly red/green colour blind so that might be why.

As for the sRGB setting, well I thought it looked odd when I tried it yesterday and nothing like the same setting I used on my Dell E228WFP monitor. It looked too dark and the colours just didn't look right at all, kind of greenish. Mind you I have been using the TFTCentral calibrated settings for over a day so I guess I may just be more used to those.
