That got me thinking, what could be different about people's set up that would make such a difference to the output. I also remembered reading somewhere that the uneveness may be down to a low quality DC converter on the backlight. Then it clicked - what can upset sensitive electronics? Magnets. What has magents in them? Speakers. What do a lot of people (but not all - particularly pro reviewers) have either side of their monitor? Yep, speakers.

Hmmm, interesting... I have both my Logitech speakers on either side of the screen with just a few millimetres between them and the frame, and the subwoofer is just to the immediate right of that but I've not seen this issue... yet.
My speakers and subwoofer are shielded though as you'd expect from PC speakers these days so unless people are using very old unshielded speakers I wouldn't expect them to be the cause of this issue really.
