HP Microserver+XPEnology

All updated :) Subtitles still don't work via DS video android

Got my fibre yesterday and my Gen8, really glad I went for it over a DS415Play, this can even transcode 720p hi10 though plex which kinda shocked me since it only has the celeron in it.

Wondering though if theres a way to expand beyond 4 3.5" drives?

People with the N54L have had 6 3.5 HDs working.

Mine is still going after 24 hors. But there again I never upgraded like they tell you to.

I just flashed the usb and booted it up and installed the latest DS. 10/1 I will be back eating my words :)

Update from me...

The web page is showing no volume. (after about 24hrs). Constantly connected and still accessible. The other is still function ok, but was turned off as it only comes on for an hour, but I turned it on this morning.
We don't seem to have lost any data, just a problem seeing the disks in the browser. It also effects the backup, so I will downgrade at some point is there is no immediate fix.
Please post if you spot a fix being mentioned.
Thank you.

Can you access the HD from within windows?
I'm asking this as my backup HD has decided to die and my 4TB HD won't be here till Wednesday.

I'm on a mac i'm afraid.

But I can log on to the server and see all my files. It seems that the volume is still there, but not accessible through the web interface.

The only issue I'm having is that the auto backup won't work as it doesn't believe the volume is there. But that is through the web interface again.

It might work if left to it's own devices.

I don't think this is a catastrophe, but has the potential to get worse.

I'm using the disks presently, but I think I will probably downgrade if a solution is not found this afternoon.

I had that error message come up when first opening the web interface (I think it was then) and that is most likely the cause.

Thanks for the info.

Further info and it's not good news.

Rolling back to 5.0 leaves me without AFP, which I need to access files over my network. I'm caught between risking staying on 5.1 and potentially losing my data and rolling back and not being able to access it at all. Well, I can ftp into it and get files that way, but not great.

Do I regret being an early adopter!

If you haven't upgraded, don't!!!!

I hope the clever guys who made this happen can debug it soon.

My new HD has come so I will do a backup later. Then format my 4 nas HDs in windows and install 5.0.
If I could find a Qnap 451 at £300 I would buy it so I wouldn't have any problems like this again.

They tell you to pick upgrade from the menu. I never did this, I just flashed the img and booted. Migrated using the latest DS.

If I was you I'd just use one spare HD which has been formatted on a PC and test.

Is anyone streaming external subtitles to their tv via the DS video app?
I'm trying to do this to my LG TV but can't find a android app that will do it GRrrrrrrr

Moneybags :D

Does sound like it ticks a lot of boxes. Will you be using xpenology on it? :D:D

Oh, and did you find a good price on it? Guess you can't say where...

I got it about £10 less that's all. But as none of the N54L parts will fit the Qnap it's back in it's box :(

xpenology was fun to try and use and it's still great in my opinion.

Will you be gifting your old server to the first person who replies :p

I'd be interested if you were flogging it though. Not sure how on this forum, but please let me know.

And do keep us informed of your experience with the qnap. I'd be very interested too.

Cheers.

There is a members market here. Read the FAQ about what you need. But I won't be putting in MM.

Will let you know about the Qnap.

I have read it will do 720 stuff ok, but 1024 maxes it out (and from my own experience transcoding at HD takes it to the very limit).

Of course, if your files don't need transcoding, you are good to go. But that can be a black art. Certainly if you have discovered the 'formula', then you are not going to need much processing power at all.

It does seem that everyone's experience can be different with the multitude of players, tv's and servers.

Guess I'm saying if it doesn't work, you may be better using your regular pc to transcode, rather than buying a more powerful server as they both have to be on all the time anyway.

All my films are in 1080p and I had no problem viewing them on my phone\tablet\TV.
A friend who was 300 miles from me used to watch films in his house from the N54L.

The HP Gen7 N54L is just below the borderline for what you need for 1080p transcoding. You might get away with a lower bitrate file or certain scenario but in the main it's going to struggle at transcoding 1080p. If you're not transcoding (i.e. m4p to iOS, or using Synology/QNAP apps) then you're not going to be too bothered about this. The QNAP TS-451 is based on the Intel Celeron J1800 @ 2.41Ghz, so it is not going to be able to transcode 1080p video (Plex forums link).

That said I think I get why Deuse has bought a NAS. The lack of maintenance, regular updates, easy to install apps and featured mobile apps (and I guess fixing subtitles) make it a compelling purchase if you don't need the horsepower for something like Plex.

I deliberated with this question for a long time and only recently replaced my old Synology with a HP Gen8 MicroServer running Ubuntu Server simply because I wanted to get away from using a NAS and use Plex heavily. But as mentioned in some scenarios the NAS wins.

Who the hell transcodes these days?
All my films that was on my N54L was in 1080p. Every device I have(phone\tablet\TV) is 1080p. And all worked great.

If a person is behind the times with their hard ware then yes, but who is these days?

Loving my Qnap :D
