HP Microserver+XPEnology

Bloody warehouse can't find my Microserver at the moment :( Have everything downloaded, usb stick formatted etc just need my Microserver bah

Not good. Hope you get it very soon/

I did it with two and it went very smoothly (after I had a problem with a network cable). I don't use many add-ons, but those I have tried worked.

I was able to update to v3 (latest) with the usual method.

Some people have reported a slow down, but I haven't noticed any in particular. I don't have anything specifically to compare it with though.

Sadly, the WOL no longer works. I can do all the stuff to get the box checked etc, but it just ignores any request to wake. Shame, but that is the only casualty of the process.

After a fast google.
http://www.xpenology.nl/wake-on-lan/ it's in german also look here

Hope that helps you.

Is there any benefit to having an SSD in my Microserver if I'm going to use Xpenology?

I've got a 128GB SSD sat here ready but now I'm starting to think it won't actually be of any use with the OS loading from USB and running from the array.

Rather than being useful will the SSD instead just cause problems with the amount of space available for each of my 3TB drives? (I intend to use SHR for my 4 3TB drives)

Better off getting a fast USB stick as it boots off the stick not the SSD.

But I read that the HDDs won't spin down if the USB is still plugged in, is that no longer the case? I'm confused now... :(

I don't have a spin down problems now. I used to ages ago. The USB has to stay in there. You can un-mount it with in synology.

It needs the USB stick when booting just leave it in and un-mount it in synology.

Oh and turn on your log file for hibernation it will say if it is or spinning down.

Try doing it this way. I think Deuse originally posted it, but it was a while ago.

Go to control panels > Task Scheduler. Then create > user defined script. Call it something like update script. User: root, and paste in this without the quotes - "
sed 's/flashupdateDeb/flashupdateDeb1/' /[email protected]> /[email protected]
mv /[email protected] /[email protected]".

Now go to updates and download the update. Do Not update yet. Go to task scheduler, select the script and press run. Then back to the update and update.

Simple and no SSH'ing at all.

Hope that sorts you. Remember if you are doing v5 update 4, you will need to manually restart.

;)

I've just did the same and it updated. I did have to turn it off and on again to complete the install.

Installed and running an absolute treat, my N54l has been up for a couple of days now. I'm a little concerned that my drives aren't hibernating, the logs show that the USB hard drive I connected up to transfer data back over is going into hibernate, but not the internal drives.

I've tried both un-mounting the USB stick, and removing it but neither seems to result in the internal drives hibernating.

Do I need to do anything else to get them to spin down?

Thanks.

Chose 20 mins for hibernation restart then go back to 10 mins. All so turn on all the logs to see if something is waking it up.

Updated to update 5 in the same way yesterday without any problem, finally got around to getting plex sorted on my atv3 so at least that might get some use now, took a while but got there, need to sort plex connect out on the xpenology tho as at the minute its running on my desktop but sharing the files stored on the xpenolgy, anyone any experience in that?

What are you trying to do? share files or plex?
If it's plex then they need the app and it will pickup the nas.

Thank you for the responses. Really helpful. Sounds like it might be a smidgen louder than my existing Synology but I guess that's to be expected.

With regards your response on question 2, do you mean the drives aren't hibernating or that you find WOL isn't always working when a device is trying to access the N54L?

To be blunt. You either pay £450 for a 4 bay synology and put up with niggles like hibernation ect.

Or you pay £100 for a 6 bay N54L and put up with it's niggles. When I've had hibernation problems it's always been the synology software.

I do suggest that up either put a quiet fan in yourself out of the £350 you saved
or like me you put rubber bungs in between the case and fan.

Thank you for the feedback again.

I understand that and just had some questions to try and understand the compromises a bit more. I suspect the noise levels are probably fine but until I got one in front of me wouldn't know for sure. Changing the fan out as well doesn't bother me.

When you say it's the Synology software does that mean you've not been able to get WOL/HDD Hibernation to work correctly on the N54L, or it does work but occasionally have issues?

It's about £350 (c.£230 saving) for something like the Synology DS414 but as you suggest still a massive difference in price.

EDIT - just to add that I've had zero issues with WOL or HDD hibernation with my existing DS211J in fact it behaves flawlessly. A lot of posts about the N54L suggests people are struggling to get WOL or HDD to spin down correctly. This would probably be a deal breaker and hence I was trying to get people's experiences with this.

Just do a search for "hibernation\WOW" on the synology forum and you will see loads of threads.

I had a DS211j and my HDs never slept. But do some more reading if I was you.
The new synology 4 bay are £415 upwards and the play version can't do plex.

32mb? that must be ancient? :D

I'm using a very old 16MB stick :D
