HP Microserver+XPEnology

Is there any benefit to having an SSD in my Microserver if I'm going to use Xpenology?)

Use the SSD as the first drive in an array by itself in DSM, install packages to it and they'll fly. Plex seems particularly happy on a system that boots from SSD, has USB boot and mechanical storage for the rest of the system.... transcodes just a wee bit faster than normal.

I've got a 128GB SSD sat here ready but now I'm starting to think it won't actually be of any use with the OS loading from USB and running from the array.

Rather than being useful will the SSD instead just cause problems with the amount of space available for each of my 3TB drives? (I intend to use SHR for my 4 3TB drives)

Better off getting a fast USB stick as it boots off the stick not the SSD.

Even using a fast USB doesn't seem worth it since that has to be removed after the OS loads anyway.

I think I'll just return the SSD and not worry about it, thanks anyway :).

But I read that the HDDs won't spin down if the USB is still plugged in, is that no longer the case? I'm confused now... :(

I don't have a spin down problems now. I used to ages ago. The USB has to stay in there. You can un-mount it with in synology.

It needs the USB stick when booting just leave it in and un-mount it in synology.

Oh and turn on your log file for hibernation it will say if it is or spinning down.

Ok, thanks :)

Right now I have the USB in one of the front ports as I thought I'd have to remove it but once I'm done transferring stuff over I'll shut down and move it to the internal port.

Now just need to figure out why WOL isn't showing as available :(.

Anyone got any recommendations for web based cloud files? Want to set up a private cloud storage for me and some mates rather than using Dropbox etc maybe with a client for IOS et all

I looked at the built in cloud station but does not seem to offer a web interface to it
