HP Microserver+XPEnology

Just a quick PC question if someone would be kind enough to advise...

My usb thumb drive is disintegrating!

I've got a replacement, but is it possible on a pc to clone it - just so I don't lose all the setting up info.

I only know mac's, so hope someone can help.

Thank you.

Just create a new one, the config is on the drives in the NAS not the USB.

Ah, that explains why it all went pear shaped!

Thank you.

How should I have have swopped all disks when in a raid 0 do you think?

There must have been a better way.

Cheers.

What version are you trying to install\installed? gnoBoot or nanoboot?

A run down of the problems you have would be good i.e. 1= 2= :)

Thanks for you reply,

Well, I am fully sorted now, but I was/am on DSM5.0-4458 and purchased new disks for one of my servers and rejigged the other.

I hadn't appreciated that the config would be stored on the disks themselves. So removing them caused it to have a hissy fit. I got the other one back, even thought he disks were initialised (I think). Strange, but it remained setup.

I'm keen to upgrade, but only when you give it the all clear deuse :D

Then I wanted to put a new usb stick in to replace a failing old one. A simple flash with the old gnoboot file and it didn't miss a beat.

Having trouble with a backup via resync that I can't shake though. Was never a problem before. Many of the shares work fine, but this one is having real problems. I have my N54L with dual stripes 2 x 2 disks (not raid 10). One for work files and one as a media server. I'm hoping one set will sleep while the other is accessed, but that might not happen. All backed up to two other servers, so redundancy is not necessary.

just as an aside, the backup between two N54L's on cat 6 is mightily impressive!

I would leave the 250Gb and just plug in the three main disks. Synology installs across all the disks and not just one. When you get your fourth disk just pop it in and you'll be able to add it to your array.

I personally didn't bother with the 250gb drive. I just felt it took up space, so sold it on eBay for ~£30. Makes the hardware even cheaper :D

Got the cabling in for a disk in the optical bay, but if you add an ssd, will storage manager recognise it and allow its use as a cache drive?

Can't seem to find any reference to whether that function works or not.

Incidentally, running nanoboot very successfully now on both machines. I had a problem with gnoboot and backing up. Worked fine for ages, then kept erroring. I even remade the resync backup and still it failed. Switched to nanoboot, updated and works perfectly. Enough reason for me to upgrade.

WOL doesn't work however, so not all positives.

Cheers.

Bit of a moot point now as my custom NAS that has the 2Tb disks I was going to use appears to be dead won't boot at all so going to move all 4 2Tb into the N54 then pick through this thread to work out what I need to do to get this all up and running

Once the DSM is loaded what RAID are people using for this?

If you are likely to be chopping and changing your disks - the standard SHR. Can expand and allows one disk redundancy.

You have a backup and want maximum throughput - raid 0 (stripe). One disk fails, you lose the lot.

Maximum failsafe - raid 10 (two disk raid duplicated). Only half the capacity.

I went for dual raid 0 stripes. Both are backed up, so no worries about data loss. One is for work files, the other for media services. My hope is the media disks will not spin up during the day and visa versa at night. Need to see whether that is the case in practice though.

It needs some careful consideration about how you intend to use it to decide. Everyone's circumstances are different, so there is no one-answer-fits-all solution.

:D

Does anyone know of a small and CHEAP VGA lcd? I've been installing blind so far but I want to test Nanoboot. So I need one.

Can't you use an adapter on your main monitor? (assuming you have one of course).

Mine is a mac mini with an hdmi connection. My monitor also has a dvi (I think it's called), so I was able to use a lead I had lying about. To switch, I just pulled the hdmi out of the mac a little and it switched to the microserver.

Failing that, I find the local tip is usually a good source of out of date kit. You can take it back when you're done too!
