HP Microserver+XPEnology

I don't actually believe this.....so I've been messing on with this since 8am this morning. Finally manage to get into the USB boot stick using Ext2Mgr...and guess what - there's no vendor file!!!!! Just boot / rd / zimage files!!!

Rinning DS3612xs_3202-Repack.pat / microserver-dsm-4.2-02.05.2013

ARGH!!!!! I could actually start crying :(

Edit your grub.conf file that's on the usb stick and add

#vender /vender show
#hw_model
kernel /zImage root=/dev/md0 ihd_num=0 netif_num=4 syno_hw_version=DS3612xs mac1=your macaddy mac2=XXXXXXXX sn=B3J4N00xxx

And add 3 numbers were the Xs are. Reboot and see.

Thedean burn the image to a spare stick and you should get a vender file.
Edit the vender file using the app and then copy it over to your stick on the Nas.

Just make sure you have the real mac addy.

To edit the mac address.

In the Synology software make sure you enable control panel > FTP > General > tick all three check boxes.
And control panel > Terminal > enable SSH Service.

Then you should be able to see the file you need. You may need to look around a little.

Use this excellent programme to edit:

I know nothing about pc's, but was able to do my own using this and it worked perfectly. The information is so scattered about, but hope this helps someone.

That info was already posted a page back. Also you can see the usb stick in windows and you can mount it.
I suggest that if anyone doesn't know about terminal\root rights etc. should stay away from synology altogether.

And don't forget to turn off terminal after. And synology have emailed people to inform them to update as 4.2\4.3 was hacked.

Apologies. You have indeed posted it before. My bad.

I tried to run the update on your post 173, but just get a blank dialog box and an ok button. But it doesn't update. Any ideas please? It is by far the easiest method I have come across and would be great if I could get it to work. Simple is good!

I'm only updating because of the security issues. It's not by choice really.

I would make sure you have a backup mate.

I'm on V5 beta now and all is good.

Thanks for that. I had a problem when trying to update and one of my two servers could no longer download the update. Saying check your ethernet cables, so guess I must have done something to cause that. Maybe deleted files perhaps. So I decided to reinstall by formatting the usb drive and putting a fresh install on. But it seems to have remembered all my settings, so I'm thinking the format left the file on perhaps? Strange it can survive a format, but no matter.
I'd be grateful for the V5 link that you actually used if you have it to hand please. Just to be sure.

You may have clicked upgrade before setting the task. V5 and have a good read as it's only a few pages.

I always use a spare HD then I can play with out hurting my files. Post back how you get on.

Just as an additional observation, after this update I don't seem to have all the applications available that were certainly there on 4.3, but as I don't use any, can't guarantee there were there on 5. But I think they were. By applications, I mean generic headings like media and lists of applications like Plex etc.
There just seem like the Synology ones now.

Which update? V5? yes it will do that as it's a beta. That's(as I said)I use a spare HD and play for a few days.

Glad you're getting on with XPEnology Dean :)

I use the built in downloader and DS downloader app to go with it.
I use no-ip for ddns it's easy to setup from a pull down menu in XPEnology. As for WOL you have to turn it on, again easy.

Hi guys,

I have just set up my N40L with DSM 5.0 and updated successfully thanks to deuse and SK82JACK instructions.

My first question is that if I am not bothered about WOL, and because I have updated successfully, should I still be looking at sorting my MAC address out? If so, is the procedure the same as for 4.2/4.3?

Yes it's the same. I would set WOL then you have your true mac addy and you can set your router
up so that the Nas has the static IP ect.

Second question is, I have setup a NOIP DNS but the DS download app gives me an error telling me to update to DSM 4.0 or above and Download station to 3.2 or above. Any ideas?

Cheers

I'm on android with the latest download app and all is ok. What you can try is instead of putting your ddns
address is,try putting in your IP address and see if that work's. Also down load the No-Ip app for the PC and run it.

Come back and let us know how you get one :)

edit=and someone maybe using the same mac addy so best to change it.

Just waiting for my forth HD to come then I will be trying synology SHR. I think it's the same as raid 5. Will post how it goes.

Well that took all night to check the 4 HDs. So far so good.

thanks, but it does not seem to work...

maybe, because the info is about a "regular" update, but shouldn´t we use/reference to the "latest" Trantor Releases with Version 3827 on a HP N54L?

Are you talking about a clean install or doing the upgrade to 4?

post the link from where you're getting the packaged from.

I'm been on V5 beta now for a week or so and it's just fine.

So I plan on getting MS Number 2 setup tonight with a direct install of XPenology rather than use ESXi.

I plan on installing two intel dual port nics next week after pay day, can I simply drop these in and the XPenology OS will detect them? I'm confident that ESXi can handle the install easily enough and then I just assign the cards, but the direct install im not sure on.

Just wait a week and V5 will be done. As for drivers head over to the XPEnology forum and look at the drivers thread.
