HP ML110 G7 32GB RAM - Cashback

Ok so just to clear a few things up.

The 8GB stick i put in was again from Kingston, part number:
KVR1333D3D4R9S/8G which sent the machine into criticle mode. The first time i stuck it in i put in along with the original 2GB that come with the machine and it booted fine but was not implementing the extra 8GB.

Upon taking the original 2GB stick out and leaving only the 8GB in thats when the alarm bells literally rang.

Im going to be getting another 8GB of the KTH-PL313E/4GB in the next week or so however the chances of getting it at the same price is slim as it was stuff that had already had the packaging opened. The RAM itself in pristine condition, just works out that bit cheaper.

Ordered mine today, should be here tomorrow \o/

Almost made the mistake of getting 2xKTH-PE313E/4G rather than 2xKTH-PL313E/4G. Pretty reasonable for ECC RAM at £27.48 per 4G stick.

Came today, installed ram and put the OS drive in the top bay.

Is indeed very quiet.
Mine came with a single 2gb stick, which I have removed for the moment.
There are two on board SATA ports.

Installing windows 2008 r2, I used the included hp prep disk to avoid having to mess about with raid drivers.

Happy the answer any questions people might have that haven't been covered above.

The only problem I'm seeing so far is the write performance to hard disk.

What mode have you got the SATA controller in? I've got mine set to RAID with the write cache enabled and I'm seeing some really low write values with small files.

0 - Write 171, Read 16384
1 - Write 365, Read 33623
2 - Write 719, Read 56179
4 - Write 1455, Read 94051

The Reads are very good, but I'd expect the Writes to be about 40x higher than that. I'll go check I do have write cache enabled in the BIOS.

Could you run ATTO on yours if you get a sec (default values).

I have no clue what your on about! :D

lol :D

Do you have Windows installed?
If so, could you download ATTO, run 'bench32' from inside the zip and just press 'start' with the default options. Let me know what your 'Write' values are for 0.5,1,2,4.

I have also ordered my server today, but decided to buy Crucial 4GB DDR3 1333MHz ECC Memory Module CL9 at a great price of £23.60 per stick, 16GB for only £94.40!

I decided against going for the 8GB sticks as they are too expensive and not too sure what will actually work in this box

Hoping i get my delivery tomorrow so i can put ESXi onto it and hopefully start building my own private Cloud, happy days

I think the power of google may be your best bet as it may impead forum rules promoting other retailers/competitors. I could be wrong though.

@Beaver: Good job mate. Definitely a good buy!

The issue I am having is finding apples to apples pricing! The server comes with different processors, some under the cashback offer and some not.... :)

Only the Xeon E3-1220 qualifies for the £150 cashback. It's available at most of the larger online places, I paid £384.99 for mine.

Everything I've read says it does not take 32gb, I'm pretty sure that ebay seller is just wrong. Having said that the memory controller certainly supports 32gb, so there is a chance that a BIOS mod may appear.

Is there any chance of getting the thread title changed, it is a bit misleading?

Im desperate to find out, as a 32GB G7 would be absolutely perfect for me to create a beefy home lab from.

Surely the tech spec is enough to go on..

That goes for both the G7 Intel Xeon E3-1220 & Intel Pentium G840 models!!!

Surely someone has an Unbuffered 8GB stick they could try?

I phoned a company called Aventis Systems (USA) and spoke to the tech support team regarding our question will the ML110 G7 E3-1220 take 32GB of ram, he basically said as long as you are on the latest BIOS it will accept 32GB of RAM,

This company is happy to sell you 32GB ram for a ML110 G7 E3-1220 and has confirmed it will work, i don't have part numbers etc would be nice to find out part numbers.....

is this the proof we been looking for?

Does it make a difference that all these discussions, links etc are coming from the states and that one with the RAM is on ebay.au? Maybe their G7 models differ from UK spec?

If a mod was to be available for the G7 to make it 32GB, with that implemented are you voiding your warranty??

Problem solved, write cache needs to be enabled in both the computer bios, and through the hp array config utility in windows. Seeing I'm using ecc ram and a ups, not to worried about data loss.

For information, the two onboard SATA Sockets are also on the smart array controller (ports 5 and 6).

It is socket 1155, but I suspect the BIOS will limit which CPU's are supported. The spec sheet says 'Latest Intel Xeon E3 4 core, Core i3 2 core, Pentium and Celeron 2 core processors'.

Did anyone establish if you can put 32GB in? How about 4x Crucial's CT102472BD1339?

They are 8GB, unbuffered, ECC, and work in a E3-1220 Primergy TX100 S3, so it is just down to whether or not HP have artificially restricted things.
