HP Pre 3 released

My Pre 3 arrived earlier also. Very nicely built phone, they've nailed the build quality on this one!

As always WebOS shines and texting from the Touchpad whilst the Pre 3 is sat on it's touchstone is really slick! :D

Ugh. I keep looking at the deals and pondering. Should I? :(:o

Edit:

Doz, what other interactions does the Pre3 do with the Touchpad? Can you call from the Touchpad or is it just txting and touch sharing web pages?

It doesn't come with the touchstone but I had one from when I was using the original Pre. For anyone else who had one, the odd bing bong problem that the old pre had with the touchstone seems to have been cleared up with the Pre 3. Charges fine and without the on/off bing bomg problems.

Which reminds me - and I realise that this may sound a bit stupid - but the T&Cs for the cash back refunds from mobiles.co.uk say that, 'Cashback will not be paid ...If you do not remain on the original tariff with the original handset. (see http://www.mobiles.co.uk/cashback.html) Would they know if the SIM they sent was put into a different phone or if the phone they sent was used with a different SIM? Seems unlikely to me but I'm no expert. Anyone know better?

Sorry I didn't reply earlier, I've just got back home.

The Pre 3 has been docked on it's Touchstone in the living room whilst I'm sat doing some tablet sofa browsing with the added ability to make & receive calls and texts from the Touchpad!

I could get used to this :D

maybe its the matter of not using minutes/txts and by looking on this they can say its not being used??

can some one post some photos of pre3 ? maybe next to some other mobiles?
how tick it is ?

I've just ordered one from mobiles.co.uk: £36pm for 12 months with 9 months free. Works out at £108 for the phone, 300 mins, unlimited texts + 500mb data. I'd been waiting for a cheap SIM free but this is the best I can hope for now, I think.

I'm torn on this deal. £108 for the year = £9 a month with nothing extra to pay (the contract should cover all my usage, anyway) - effectively, the phone is free. It's a great deal. BUT... but... but... I hate these redemption contracts. They're a recipe for disaster. I checked out the terms, there are 4 claims that have to be made in months 6, 8 , 10 and 12 of the contract. If one goes wrong for any reason, that's £72 down the drain.

Not sure what to do... ho hum.

You have to be ready, i.e. have it in a calendar and as soon as you receive the corresponding bill send it via Recorded Delivery. Still a ball ache in a way, might be better to accept a PS3 or HP Mini as the 'gift' instead, then you're paying £36 for 12 months for a phone & 'gift'.

the gifts are worth about 200quid or so
It would be a lot less hassle to take the gift; if only it was anywhere near the value of the 9 months free (=£324).

Had a quick play with the Pre3 in CPW yesterday. It's a nice looking phone, not too big, it would fit in a jeans' pocket ok unlike some of the larger screened phones. The finish is nice, the back is kind of rubberised rather than shiny. The phone is tad on the thick side because of the keyboard. In fact, the only thing I didn't like was the keyboard: it's a bit shiny and plasticky looking.

Still haven't made my mind up, then. Lol...

Well, my long quest for a Pre 3 is finally complete, but I'm stuck with a really frustrating dilemma.

The 2 I had ordered from Cleverboxes way back over a week ago arrived... except there was only 1 in the box! I called them up and they initially squirmed and tried to claim they definitely sent 2, but they eventually admitted it was their mistake and they refunded me for the missing one.

The one I ordered from e2save on a 24 month O2 contract (effectively £10.50 by redemption) also arrived. I had placed this order before CPW offered it on 12 month contracts. The day before in fact! Curse my twitchy trigger-finger!

Finally, the one I ordered from mobiles.co.uk on a 12-month Vodafone contract also arrived. This is the one I'm planning to keep for myself, with the one from Cleverboxes going to my dad who's on an ancient HTC WinMo6 phone. So I'm planning to return the e2save one.

Except there's one problem: the e2save one is a 16GB model, the other 2 are only 8GB, and I'm not sure I can live with that! :( There's only about 5.5GB free after the OS installation, and the reduced internet allowance on the Vodafone contract means I can't just stream music like I do atm on giffgaff. (Not that I could atm, as the provider I use, We7, don't have a WebOS app yet)

So I'm really debating this atm. One of the two contract phones HAS to go back, but do I settle for 8GB and 12 months, or do I bite the bullet and commit to O2 for 24months in exchange for twice the storage? This is really bumming me out! :( I actually seriously considered defrauding e2save, calling them to say "oh, the box says it's a 16GB model but there was only an 8GB model inside!" and returning the box with the other phone in, but I ruled that out. Not cause I felt guilty (everyone has their price, and mine is 16GB:p), but because I knew they could just IMEI-block the 16GB phone I would keep!:D

So, anyway, I know it's a totally subjective question and I won't really base my decision on what people say, but which is the lesser evil for you folks, 24 months or 8GB? :p

The phone so far seems great btw, the OS is a revelation and the UI is much better than any Android or iOS UI I've ever handled. Everything just seems to take one less swipe than it did on Android. I'm really hopeful Google will steal some of their UI tricks for Ice Cream Sandwich (which they said will be the first Android version that will be able to make do without buttons). The only things that bother me is the lack of some apps (eg. Skype, We7 and especially Kindle), but I'm hopeful that people will get round to making them now that the entire initial batch of Pre 3s has basically sold out within a week. I'm not missing widgets so far, because having an app open as a card (eg Evernote) serves the same purpose of being able to give you the same information at a glance, but I haven't yet figured out how to set them to open at launch, or at least to put their shortcuts on the main homescreen rather than in the launcher list.
