Better yet, the pages were actually opened at 9:15, so the whole thing was once again badly managed. HP should have let everyone register, the taken a random 6000 pick from those registrations.

I registered at 10:20 - no probs for me (a little slow perhaps) got the confirmation through almost immediately.

Just got off the phone to ******.

They said my orders gone through and I should have it within 3-5 working days. I'm hopeful but not getting too excited just yet.

Edit - This is for a 16gb touchpad bundle.

You know it occurs to me that at the prices (circa £200) they're just about break-even on what it cost to manufacture them! I think that's really interesting, for HP to try and sell them at a massive loss and the market readjusting itself at a level actually on par with what the product actually costs. Counting HP's cut from software sales through the Catalog they could still be making a profit there.

Just goes to show the painful truth about the tablet market really: if your main competitor has 80% of the market, you can't expect to break into it by selling your own product at the same price point, even if it's slightly better! It seems the major manufacturers just weren't prepared to make the hard decision to take a hit for the first couple of years in order to make enough of a dent in Apple's dominance.

It makes we wonder if we will see any further offerings from any of the major resellers at the original "fire sale" prices".

It would be good if we did, but in view of the reent pricing by the DSG... and the quick uptake of these, I have strong doubts that this will now happen

I don't think anyone thought the Touchpad was better than it's rivals at the price point it launched at.

It's a £250 tablet realistically. @ £200 it's good value, @ firesale prices it's a no brainer - hence the commotion.

Actually its a higher spec than the ipad and has more than £200 of parts in it.

Its only let down by the OS which hopefully can be fixed with upgrades.

Even only applying the patches speeds it up vastly.

If as has been stated several times HP WebOS team are sorting android apps running on it I would prefer it to android honeycomb for UI which is much better than apples playgroup affair.

On top of that HTC have said they are looking at buying an OS and the only one out there is WebOS unless you want to start from scratch so maybe a future after all.

I wasn't actually saying that the Touchpad was better than the iPad, I was talking generally and saying that if a company is as entrenched as Apple is in the tablet space, the only way for competitors to break in is to severely undercut them, and offering a better product is not enough. I wasn't making a comment on any individual tablets and saying whether they are better than Apple's.

In the case of the Touchpad though, it apparently cost about $30-50 more than an iPad 2 to manufacture, so it most definitely isn't a £250 tablet in real terms. I do agree with you though that HP would have HAD to sell it at £200-250 in order to move a satisfactory number of units, purely because of how dominant the iPad is in that market!

I'm actually very curious to see the spec list for Amazon's upcoming tablet. It was rumoured that it'll go on sale for £199. I suspect though that if we added up the price of its components it'll turn out to be in the same ballpark as an iPad 2, so Amazon will be counting on making money from selling apps, music and ebooks.

after I've been unlucky so many times, I've started to look around for options ...
not that I miss the deals but since I'm not a UK/US resident, it's very problematic when billing address is not in UK/US for some of the online shops (thus missed the really sweet QVC deal ... I had a friend's address where to ship it but not a US CC)

anyway, have you seen:

(US price is 299$, UK is slightly more as usual though only for pre-order)

I just got off the phone to pcw about my 32gb bundle - said I will be getting it this week but also that they have quite a lot of the tablets in stock, its just not been put on the website yet probably because of Touchstone stock issues! So keep an eye out

I'm sure they are making this up as they go along.

I got told when i rang it maybe a few days for the touchpad, as they were waiting but should be ok. But the accessories maybe shipped before as they are ready to go.

So i would take everything they say with a pinch of salt.

This. I was trying to get another one for a mate and they told me this afternoon TP out of stock but they hope to get more but accessories are all in stock.

Got my 16gb pad today through a reseller via friends work. They had 7 on Friday when we enquired. 15 mins later I got last one. First impression is good but seems quite different from Samsung and apple pads I am used too.

are any of the accessories a good buy or are they not essential?

We're up to page 300 and we're still going :)

I had to setup an iPad today at work and it was so much lighter. Made me a little disappointed in my Touchpad but I thought about the price and I was ok again.

Just received my dispatch email with tracking number for the 32 GB bundle, so will hopefully receive it tomorrow (Tuesday), which is pretty good service really! :)

I am quite looking forward to receiving it now.

Edit: Just checked their website again, and they aren't even showing any availability of the two accessories (Touchstone or case) at the moment.
