Trade Union, they have no choice

Ah ok.

Sounds like HP won't get any better with this new leader....

Whitman defended her record at the helm of EBay.

“I have run a large company -- not obviously as large as HP, but I have run a very large company,” she said. “While I don’t have years of experience in an enterprise business, I bought a lot of software. I was one of the largest enterprise customers in Silicon Valley.”

“That’s like saying, ‘I’ve bought an iPhone, so I can runApple Inc.

O dear.

Well, she can't do worse than Leo "I have no clue" Apotheker or Mark "hatchet man with a penchant for soft porn stars" Hurd.

hardly a simple as that, before this stunt no one was buying webOS, there was no market for the dev (app market) and his idea's seem to have worked.
They have accomplished more with the fire sale then had have happened with pumping the same amount of money into other options.
A $1.2Billion market is still a market to sell to, and a $1billion advertising campaign could not guarntee the same publicity or user base.

TBh I think he's pushed HP into a strange but strong position (even if he did not directly intend too).

Well yes obviously the Pre and Touchpad sold like hotcakes at the discounted prices, but his intention wasn't to jump-start their sales, his intention was to get them done and over with.

That wasn't my point though. Maybe it was foolish for HP to get into the phone business, maybe it was a bad idea to buy Palm, but $1.2 billion is a lot of money to write off simply as a "learning experience" ffs! You got up to dance, at least stay till the end of the song, don't shutter the whole division 1 month after the Touchpad is released and before the Pre 3 was even officially out! It shows disgusting lack of planning!

<crystal ball>They'll be a new (or CR) peice of WebOS hardware by the end of October</cystal ball>

Thats how read it! I buy the product so I know how to run that company. Shame really as HP make some nice products and last few years have been rocky for them.

I hope you're right. There's no way they can lisence WebOS, unless they SEVERELY undercut WP7. But why would anyone pay for a lisenced OS that has even smaller market share and less developer support than WP7, especially when they could have Android or Meego virtually for free? They *could* sell it outright if they focussed on porting the Dalvík virtual machine to WebOS, as then you'd be able to run Android apps on it and it would hit the ground running. But as it stands right now, it's a great OS that won't be able to make inroads on the market without the muscle of a big company behind it, and it seems HP by default is the only company that can fulfil that role.

"OMFG you never guess what I got you!!!1"

Never tell someone your trying to get something then forget to mention you got one.

And now broke.
