HS2/High Speed 2 - Will it happen?

Once you get past the headline, that sounds a sensible plan he is proposing and the sort of long term thinking and investment this country needs.

It should be cancelled and instead we should invest in much better broadband for the whole country. Physical presence is not so important these days.

Huh, incase you never noticed there is a massive bottleneck in the rail, capacity is full, a few upgrades here and there only buys a little time, broadband indeed just lol not everyone works at home.

Capacity is only full on most commuter routes. The only time i travel by train is over long distance, not once have any long distance routes i have used has been anywhere near full.
HS2 won't change any of that, anyone that thinks it will must be living in a mind of there own. All that HS2 amounts to is a government vanity project that will end up being paid for by taxpayers for the next 50 years+

Imagine all of the infrastructure we could have got with all of that debt that was wracked up post 2008. Makes me sick thinking about it.

HS2 is going to create its own demand. You're gonna be able to get from Birmingham to London 49 minutes. London to Manchester in 67 minutes. Manchester to Birmingham in 41 minutes. I'll bet money that those routes are rammed at traditional peak hours.

The advantages of HS2 are that the existing lines are freed up for more freight. As long as that is made possible with road / rail interchanges at suitable locations close to main line and motorway links.

I agree that journey times are less important than providing a comprehensive public service but we have not invested in major new rail routes outside of cities since Victorian times.

I'm not talking about working from home necessarily, I'm talking about more regional offices without the need to have everything concentrated in London. However, I'll have to do more research on this issue. Why aren't we doing more teleconferencing, why do we need to physically be in the same location?

It's interesting with HS2, it is a LOT of money no question, but it really is needed (or the same money ploughed into our road network) because commuting between the North and South in general is horrific. In normal road conditions it takes between 3.5 - 4 hours to get to London from either Manchester or Leeds by road and that is pathetic, and with the price of a train ticket into London from either it often works out easily and cheaper to fly. The UK needs fast transport between London, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Glasgow and Edinburgh ... it's not really optional IMHO.

Did you even click on the link I posted? Freight is a huge deal.
