**HTC HD2 Thread**

FYI, the SMS bug is due to HTC Sense's Messaging system, not WM. Disabling HTC's system and using the default WM messaging platform fixes the bug. HTC have since released a patch (within 2 weeks) which seems to be working for the majority of people and has reduced it significantly for me.

So yeah, your anti-WM argument is kinda void with that one :p. Any others?

Ahhh so they have released a patch or are about to but yet it still doesnt work properly?? lol

Oh i have plenty of other little niggles with Winmo but i dont see the point of mentioning them.

But seriously though the HD2 is a very nice piece of hardware...its very snappy and quick...definitely liked the weather animations....

Right....

Just got mine and am slowly getting to grips with it....

One major issue I have right now is that I can't view youtube on it because it says I need to update flash. If I try to download the update it gets a progress bar, eventually says it's downloaded but I can't work out how to install it... Hmmmmm :(

EDIT: Is there something like a 'youtube app' so I can simply access it from the home page thingy?? If so, where do I find it??

youtube should be pre installed as an app rather than viewing the website. if it isnt installed go to the marketplace and download it for free as an app :)

Yes, HTC have released a patch. As I said previously my phone stopped sending again for a short period last night, so I'm keeping my eye on it from now on.

It's not on the phone :(
And i cant find it in marketplace either :(

Are you positive? Where did you get the HD2 from?

Positive. I've searched the net and it turns out it's a tmobile thing....

You can download the propper HTC youtube.cab though from here and it works fine :)

yes but you have only skipped around the problem

you should be finding out why flash doesnt work ! imo its one of the features that makes this stand out above the 3gs for browsing

from what i understand, flash doesn't work with Opera but it does with IE on the device

Yeah shame flash isn't supported in Opera, hopefully the next version will. But for general browsing i use browser, but if i want to use flash i use Skyfire.

SMS Thread Loading Time WORKAROUND

While playing with my HD2 I discovered a workaround for the SMS thread loading time/tap to compose delay. This is VERY bodge-job, but also goes to prove that the HD2 is MORE than capable of loading long conversations quickly, but there's just a coding error on HTC's behalf.

Firstly, you might want to time how long it takes you to open a long thread normally. With one of my contacts I get a whopping 21 seconds.

Ok so here's the simple workaround:
  1. Open up your SMS thread
  2. Straight away, hit the send key/button
  3. It should ask you if you're sure you want to send a blank message - wait half a second or so (dependant on your thread size), then press "No"
  4. Tadaaa! Your thread should be FULLY loaded, and you can begin typing

If you don't wait half a second or so before pressing no, it seems to give a graphical glitch which keeps the SMS slider faded for a little while and doesn't allow you to tap to compose as quickly.

My guess is that by fading out the SMS thread with the confirmation dialogue, you are essentially disabling the graphical loading bar/transition of messages into the thread, and as a result, the loading time is FAR quicker.

I think it goes to prove that the problem is a GUI coding error.

Anyway, I hope this helps others until HTC get off their backsides and fix this.

I've had my HD2 a week now so here are my thoughts...

Pros
  • Amazingly customisable - there's already a number of decent apps/themes/tweaks/mods coming out of XDA and a load of help for any issues. A lot of them really are 'must haves' as well.
  • Interface is generally amazing, from the main home screen to text message conversations and everything else.
  • Opera is blazingly fast when combined with some XDA tweaks and mods. It absolutely blew my friends iPhone out the water (connected to the same WiFi) - his took a good 3 seconds longer to load Amazon.com than me, and his loaded the mobile version, while mine had fully loaded the desktop version.
  • Using it as a modem couldn't be simpler. I literally plugged it into my laptop this weekend while at my parents, selected Internet Sharing on the phone (as opposed to Sync and File Transfer) and I'd already connected to MSN and the like by the time I looked back at my laptop.
  • It's very fast, and I haven't had any loading delays or anything of the like other than when it's still booting.
  • The keyboard is very accurate and easy to use once you get used to it (I came from an N95 and I'm pretty quick already).
  • Facebook integration is seamless and awesome.

Cons
  • Text message bug seems to be a problem still. Occurs randomly but semi-frequently, but hasn't for a few days now.
  • Updating the ROM (software) is extremely long winded at the moment - don't know why, possibly because the ROM update is leaked at the moment.
  • The Facebook app is ****, although a lot of the 'problems' are also shared by the iPhone one.
  • Opera doesn't support Flash and using IE is just a plain nono.

There's a few other small niggles, but I'm very picky and hopefully nothing that can't be solved by the geniuses at XDA or HTC themselves.

My home screen (quality is better on the phone's screen, the screenshot app has just reduced things a bit):

Some apps: www.rghjones.co.uk/htc - browse there directly on the phone for the easiest installation.

I'd recommend:

TorchButton_v2.2 - An app for using the flash as a torch
Touch X LEO turbo - Improves performance by increasing cache etc
Transparent Slider - Makes the home tab slider transparent
Vovichek_Jamrecords_20shcut_m2525 - Puts a grid of 5x4 quicklinks on the home screen
brianstaskbar - Taskbar icons (see above)
curtain - Removes the semi-transparent curtain behind the network operator text (see above)
duttys - Awesome task manager
inbox - Adds a "Mark as Read" menu item to the inbox
regedit.Stngr_ARM - A basic but functional registry editor for doing more tweaks

Also see this awesome thread for loads of tweaks etc: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638

I hope that helps people a bit! :)

A lot of these apps won't install due to being unsigned?

Right. I'm having nothing but problems with this bloody thing. I'm on a super cheap contract (with an old T-mobile employee discount) so it cost me £180 to upgrade and I'm sorely disappointed :(

The YouTube App I linked to earlier is buggy and rubbish. It takes AGES to load anything (even on wifi when the browsers are lightening quick), always has the play, stop and other buttons on top of the image and if you try and quit the app it snarls up the phone.

Opera won't view flash so I can't watch Youtube on that, and IE loads the mobile version of YouTube which seems to work until I actually click 'watch video' and then I immediately get the 'this page can't be displayed' message.
It's not even like it's trying to connect at all, it's immediate.

All in all, it's a very pretty, impressive looking phone but about as functional as a not very functional thing!!!! :(

Any help or advise?? I want to like it, I really do, but it's not going well.

GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

Followed the 'download youtube app' link. Downloaded it and then got the message that the installation was unsuccesful because it wasn't digitally signed with a trusted certificate!!!

I kinda figure it's my phone so it should be up to me whether it's installed?? Warn me sure, but I should be able to say install anyway!! Shouldn't I?

All installed fine for me!

Seems your having a lot of problems Chris! I say a lot... do you actually need YouTube on your phone? :p Yeah it's nice to whip out and impress friends occasionally but I haven't opened the app once since leaving the shop and getting a demo of it.

Why didn't your phone come with the app anyway? Are any people on XDA having the same problems as you?

I know you're angry but saying the phone isn't functional because your network removed the YouTube app isn't really that justified :p.
