**HTC HD2 Thread**

I finally saw one in the flesh today and damn its nice! A lot thinner than I was expecting to... I really, really want one now. :(

Whats the cheapest PAYG/Sim free price (with quidco)? :o

i'm getting the occasional jumpy about screen and random key presses while texting, its well documented on xda and it would seem around 50% are suffering some kind of problem with the screen.

do i live with it or ring virgin and see if they will swap it out, seems some have had theirs swapped only to be worse or no better.

More on the subject here

Looking at this phone, could owners answer some questions for me.

How long is the battery lasting with normal use?
First coupld of days it was lasting a day. That was with me constantly messing around with it. Now I have it all set up and only use it for texting, I sent 30ish texts yesterday and took 3 short phonecalls, trimmed a couple of mp3's to change my rington, didn't put it on charge last night and right now its got 47% battery left :) It last came off charge about 25 hours ago.

Can it be upgraded legitimately to W7 on it's release?
There is an email on xda from HTC saying that windows 7 will be available on this phone in november and this phone has the hardware to work with it.

What's the Facebook app like? Is it a touch on the iPhone one?
Terrible.

How does the camera perform?
Not great to be honest. Flash is awful. I've ended up downloading a torch, tap the torch then hit the camera button and use that as a flash. Its much better.

What's texting like?

Im getting on fine with it now. Im a heavy texter so this was a worry for me to be honest. There is something on XDA where you can turn the sensitivity down on the keypad which means you make far less mistakes. I tried swype. Seems like a bit of a gimmick if Im honest. I actually timed myself using both inputs and the normal keypad worked far quicker for me.

Does it crash often? How stable is it?

Not really crashed, stopped responding once, I hit the end button to sent it into lock and it was fine once unlocked.

And finally, what is browsing full internet pages like?
Brilliant compared to my old omnia. Don't use Interenet Explorer for pages with flash, its carp. Theres a browser calle skyfire which worked great with flash sites :)

Been answered before but thought I'd give my views.

Ok, I've had this for a day and I'm ready to send it back to Virgin.

Pros:
Firstly, its a gorgeous handset, and the screen is lush. The OS is snappy and quick, didnt have a problem with texting etc. Great integration with Facebook, if thats your thing, though the built-in Facebook app is crap.

The cons:
I've had to rebuild the OS twice (in one day), the first time was when I first turned it on and it wouldnt boot! The second when I made registry change to Opera and the HTS Sense overlay disappeared!

Opera on the HD2 isnt quite as good as Safari on the iPhone. You need to press the menu button in order to bring up a GUI to go back or select a bookmark. I prefer the menu to always be there. Also, you need to zoom in a bit in order to click on a link. And if I want to click on a small link, like the page numbers in this thread, I need to zoom in loads before i can click on it. On Opera I can click it from the standard, zoomed out view.

Also, the handset seems to be constantly accessing data! Having the weather, internet time, facebook apps constantly updating itself runs down the battery like no tomorrow, and its probably eating into my data allowance too! You can turn these off, but start up Opera, surf the net for a bit, and forget to exit it completely and its still connected to the data!

I'm an iPhone 2G user, I really want to like this, so i'll play with it for a few more days before deciding whether to send it back.

You can get an app to auto-disconnect idle data connections, not that it really matters that much in terms of battery power (it means nothing in terms of data as having a minimised browser doesn't continually download and upload data).

Does anyone have the playstation games working on their HD2? Im trying to decide whether it worth the effort or not...

Loads of people on XDA-Devs have, but I dont have the money for the Bluetooth controller at the moment, and can't be arsed with onscreen buttons.

Will probably try it in the future though.

Yeah I guess so, however, we shouldnt need a third party app for something that should have been incorporated into the handset from the off tbh. Out of interest, whats the name of the app in question?

Gonna have a play with Playstation games on it this weekend, fancy some Final Fantasy 8 on the move!

Rght I have my HD2 performing exactly how I need it to. I have everything working that I would ever use.

However Im after those silly iphone style apps that are no use at all other than to appear pretty cool. Anyone got any or know of a site with a list?

Again, just thought I'd give my view :).

About a day with normal use. There's a number of apps and tweaks out there to help extend this, such as disconnecting from the internet after inactivity (still allows push email etc, just really helps save the battery).

Who knows. Probably. And if not officially, someone'll custom ROM it.

What's the Facebook app like? Is it a touch on the iPhone one?
From using my friends Facebook app, I'd say pretty much the same minus chat - for the things I use it for anyway. I now use touch.facebook.com which is way better (and better than the iPhone app imo).

How does the camera perform?
Good, in my experience. In the light the quality's great and in dark it's adequate with the flash.

What's texting like?
Fine... texting is texting. There was a few problems which have all been hotfixed since release. You can also use (and I am using) Swype which speeds up text entry and isn't available on the iPhone (at least yet).

Does it crash often? How stable is it?
It's crashed maybe twice in the 3 months I've had it. I say crashed - I've just been in a hurry and pulled the battery rather than wait. Other than that it's very stable, even when overloading it with custom tweaks/icons/graphics etc.

And finally, what is browsing full internet pages like?
Awesome. The big screen helps, but Opera alone is blazingly quick, very good at displaying complex pages (and JavaScript) and much faster than Safari on the iPhone. You can also use IE for Flash support, or wait for the next official release of Opera.

Well received my HD2 and very impressed I must say. I can see why people can see the benefits of something like the iphone as its probably easier to use in certain ways... but if you love messing about with stuff and changing bits its easily the phone to have!!

Check this out -

If you charge your phone overnight, when you wake up, take the charger out and plug it back in for 30 mins to an hour, even if it says 100%.

After doing this I can take my phone off charge at 8am and by now, 2:30pm I still have over 90% battery life left! I'd normally be at 50% if I didn't re charge in the morning

Just made myself some new icons - this is why I love the HD2 :D. Even if I say so myself, I love the look of the floating contact heads.

This will wreck your battery in the long run.

Hi, I having just one issue with the phone, however it's probably me. I'm trying to get it onto the internet via my school's proxy server and a wireless access point. I can get it onto the network ok and the server has given the phone the correct IP, however I've input'd the proxy server settings and the port number but it still will not go online to a website.
Can anyone who has done this talk me through the correct process please?
Cheers,
Chris

This will wreck your battery in the long run.

any info on why? the battery clearly is far from full. a solution would be to attach the charger to a timer to come on a few hours before you wake up.

im on still on 85% at the moment. id rather buy a new battery every 6 months if it means I get more than twice the battery life!
