***HTC Magic Thread***

Hmm my swap says 0, doesn't it use compcache though which is disabled in 4.2 ?

I've no idea. From reading through the Cyanogen thread on xda, it seemed to me that my swap file wasn't activated and following some instructions I got the results shown on my screen in that terminal ap.

It might be my imagination but it does seem faster than before, and I thought that was fast.

Due to pick my magic up tomorrow! Read many pages when the phone first cam out but now thers just so many pages to look through its a lot of hassle!

Being cheeky, could someone post what the best ROM is to use and the best gadgets etc to get for it!

Cheers :D

Most of the people who post in this thread, that have stated that they have a custom ROM, seem to favour Cyanogen's ROM's. He takes stock Android and makes it fast and, for the most part, smooth.

Currently 4.2.2 stable is out (which is based around the 1.6 Donut code thats currently hitting the UK's Magic's atm).

As for apps well that depends on what you want to do.

I've paid for 2 apps so far.

MyBackUp Pro (does what it says on the screen)
Weather Forecast Widget (I like a nice looking weather widget on my screen and, imo, this one looks the best that I've seen)

and the free ones

1337pwn.com (a great XBox Live friends thingy that tells you when they're online and what they're upto)
Google Sky Map (Space, the final frontier)
Twidroid (arguably the best android Twitter app)
Listen (podcast downloaded/listener)
The Guardian Anywhere (us lefties need our daily does of Marx)
Tech Buzz Widget (great homescreen app that is configurable to show various tech news. mine is perma set to Android news)
Gaming Buzz (as above but for consoles. Mines on XBox)
ShopSavvy (barcode scanner that tells you where you can find it cheaper. I think I was ****ing off the staff in HMV recently as everything I scanned was cheaper elsewhere)
aTrackDog (app manager that keeps an eye out for updates)
eBuddy IM (pretty good IM package that connects to most, if not all, IM systems)
Places Directory (stuck in a city you don't know? Load up Places Directory and just before you get mugged for your phone you can see what services are nearby)
My Tracks (app that uses Google Maps and GPS to track you when you go for walks, runs, cycle rides, pretty much anything outside and then you can upload these tracks to Google Maps on the net and view them there)
Linda File Manager (as it says but minus any Linda's)

to name but a few.

Got my 1.6 update today, can't say I notice much difference tbh. Annoyed that Gallery still hasn't been changed so you can swipe to the next photo instead of those stupid arrows.

Done :)

Love how it keeps all the settings, apps, texts etc!

Spent a while trying to find how to export a list off apps, knew i had seen it somewhere! Finally found it in atrackdog!

Seems ok so far, all i use seems to still work... and i like the wee change to the main menu icon!

My Magic has been running 4.2.1 for 64 hours and hasn't slowed down at all. In fact it's still running as if it was freshly booted. In contrast up until now, with stock 1.5 Cupcake and various Cyanogen versions, I've had to reboot every day or so to remove the lag.

The reason I haven't updated to 4.2.2 is 1. I don't need the couple of changes made and 2. I want to see how long I can run for before I feel the need to reboot.

Looks like BFS and Compcache were a little problematic for me in the slowing down respect. 96mb Linux swap 4tw (sorry microsd card but your life expectancy isn't what you first hoped).
