HTC One vs Sony Xperia Z vs Samsung Galaxy S IV thread

This is the decision I'm making at the moment! Mainly between the Sony and the HTC One as I don't think I can be bothered waiting for the Galaxy S4. I've also had an S2 for the last two years and fancy a bit of a change.

At the moment I think I'm going to wait for the HTC.

I'm leaning towards HTC even though I wanted a SD slot on my next phone. Reason is because I don't like the Soft Navigation keys, bad viewing Angle on the Xperia (me and my girlfriend will be watching youtube and play games together a lot on the phone. Being able to hear the sound in videos and games etc while outside or a nosier enviroment with the Boom Sound stereo speakers.

Definitely keen on the HTC One... are network companies still easily brought down on tariff price if you phone them up? The prices on Vodafones 'upgrade' page are worst offers than most new contracts!

It really isn't anything to do with megapixels, depending on how you look at it.

And many many more articles saying the same thing more or less.

I still think the mediocre performance of the one camera is due to software as everything else about the camera hardware is at least as good as the lumia 920 and the lumia 920 was pretty poor before its software update.

Indeed, certainly isn't as good as what HTC are making it out to be when looking at all the samples........

I wonder if their dedicated image sense chip and/or conjunction with the software/driver optimisation for it is the problem?

I think it is somewhat to do with mp as in use ultra pixel size but also more of them, as I'm sure we'll see in future iterations.

Ok, the GS 4 has impressed me more than what I thought it would, definitely a lot more than the gs 3. They have done what I wanted mainly:

- improved design, not amazing, but better
- brought a load of camera features in, hopefully slow motion recording is there

Some great smart tweaks, the swype gesture/air float thing, however, no doubt that these will be ported over as apps just like the smart stay, floating video player etc. so not a unique selling point

So tough decision between the htc one and it (assuming the htc one camera will get better)

Don't care about cpu/gpu performance, happy with the screen of the one but prefer SAMOLED (however, going by that review of the gs 4 by the chinese site, the screen looks poorly calibrated so hoping that will improve with final units/software, haven't read the verge etc. hands on yet though)

So all in all, for me so far:

main pros of one:

- build/perceived quality
- sense V5 overall
- front speakers

cons of one:

- awful button/logo setup

main pros of GS 4:

- SAMOLED screen (assuming it gets better)
- design of the front
- smaller and bigger screen

cons of gs 4:

- touchwiz

Camera features/software seem to be on par overall.

Prefer the front design of the GS 4 but prefer the back design of the one. EDIT: after seeing more photos of the gs 4, I actually don't like the new pattern look, chinese prototype looked better :/

Will wait for camera samples and more battery impressions from the one and obviously see what the battery is like for the gs 4 :p It will ultimately come down to those factors for me. If both are in favour of the GS 4 by a good bit, then it wins, if not and they are a good chunk better on the one then the one wins and if both are similar then, no idea :p (edit: probably would go for the htc one after thinking about it)!

XZ for me from the 3

I'll be upgrading from a desire hd so any screen is going to be an improvement, I just cant get past the one's 2 button setup and always-on blinkfeed and the GS4's plastic and lack of meaningful innovation....

I'll update the OP in the morning. I better go to bed and no doubt have nightmares about Samsung's presentation. :o

always-on blinkfeed

Can you not just change the refresh period to never/manually and use a different launcher? :p

They all disappoint - bring on the 2013 Nexus.

I thought you would have been pretty impressed with the gs 4?

Indeed, next up, the "X" phone

Likewise, my eyes actually hurt after that awful show :o :p

Original post updated with S4 info.

Truth be told, I'm not hugely excited by any of them. I think the S4 should easily edge it overall as expected though.

What impressed me the most out of them all was the design of the HTC One - it's really good. However you've then got the 'usual', a bit of a gimped phone, camera/battery/storage/button wise (at the moment, at least). :(

How many GS3 or Note 2 owners carry a spare battery? Not many I bet...
Removable storage is still an issue though. HTCs cloud services are rubbish, no where near good enough to use limited storage as a hook like the iPhone and Nexus.

The Nexus 4 is still the best £for£ champ for me.

Your move Nokia, Motorola and Apple.

(still no high end 720p 4.3" Android phones :()
