HTC Vive

Having a few random "grey screen" disconnect's with my headset. It'll go grey for around 3 seconds ingame and reconnect again, mostly experienced in on Brookhaven. Is there anything that cause's this I can't seem to put my figure on it.

I dont think thats a disconnect, if the HMD looses tracking or is getting a lot of dropped frames it resorts to blanking the screen. It does this because if it served you frames based on bad or old positional data then it would cause nausea.

I don't want to use a vive sitting down a la Rift as i think i'll get nausea.

Sitting isn't what causes nausea, its when you get moved without making that physical movement. You can sit and use teleport mechanics, swivel, move your head around and use the motion controls and still not get nausea. If the game turned you around while you were still sat facing forward or shifted you forward while you are physically still those things would be nauseating. Thats why the rift has nausea problems, the only way to move in it is with the stick on the controller. Oculus knew this and talked about it publically but for some reason went with it anyway

Trouble is if you sit and something is out of reach you cant just take a step forward so you will have to get fairly precise with your teleports

Oh ok could be tracking, I play infront of a 58" TV which is switched off and has quite a black gloss to it, wonder if this is effecting it?

As above, it is an issue with tracking. If the headset loses tracking, the screen goes grey. Make sure nothing is covering the sensors and you don't have any reflective surfaces that could interfere.

I found that when I touch the HMD it sometimes goes grey, what I thought was happening was that I was pushing the outer part out a bit causing this to happen.
The vive can be adjusted to move the lenses in our out using the side knobs, but if you hold the front part you can move it slightly causing the grey screen.

I have my room setup in an L shape so that when I'm room scale standing the HMD tracks both lighthouses but when sitting down the HMD only see's one lighthouse so if I turn my head more than 90 degrees it goes grey as it looses tracking or if I hold my hand up to the HMD or someone stands in the way it turns grey.

That is more likely that you are accidentally covering some of the sensors on the HMD with your hands

The vive doesnt have sensors on the back, when facing some directions your HMD will only be able to see beams from one lighthouse for positional information and then if while playing your hand waves between the HMD and the lighthouse you will have effectively obstructed the tracking and cause a blackout. If you attempt to do this intentionally you should be able to reproduce the results.

In the full version of brookhaven I gather there is a mechanic where your face can get webbed and you have to 'wipe' your face which actually could cause you to obscure your tracking

This is why they recommend you place the lighthouses high up, its more likely the boxes will still have line of sight over your arms. And probably why they dont recommend more than a 5x5 playspace because they would have to be pretty high to get a downward view at 5m away. From the sound of things you dont have them high enough as it shouldn't be possible for someone to stand in the way. Obviously if they are the jolly green giant and you a dwarf there are limits to what is possible ofc

Had a problem the other night when i pressed the dashboard button the controllers would loose tracking and the screen goes grey. Solved it by disabling the camera even though it had been working fine for a week.

I found something interesting with my new VR machine I built and a tracking issue.

Specs: i7-4790K @ 4.4Ghz, 16GB HyperX, MSI 1070 Gaming X 8GB, 256GB SSD (OS) 1x 1TB SSD (Games) 1x 1TB HDD (For extra space and media).

I was losing tracking in Audiosurf sometimes. Not at the same points. Tried reinstalling all software & drivers, disabling camera, USB2 rather than USB3, re-mounted the lighthouses, turned off all room fans keeping me cool, covered reflections in the room.....nothing seemed to work. Was a fresh OS install so not the OS.

After thinking of possibly doing a dreaded RMA, I had an epiphany. I wondered if the mechanical drive's spinning up and down due to access/power saving was causing some kind of OS IO interrupt which effected the entire system, so I disconnected it.

Worked.

So now my VR machine is entirely on SSDs, with perfect tracking. Just a thought to others who might be having a similar issue.

Prices for the new accessories are extortionate. £116 and £33 shipping for a controller?? Near £70 for a new 3-in-1 cable. £120 for a base station which we were told were not expensive to make.

Maybe I am just tight but they are way overpriced imo :(

I notice that when i put on my headset - its set slightly at an angle - is there any way to calibrate the display in game to level it? Its most prominent in Vanishing Realms, but I also notice it using virtual desktop.

Interesting about the hard disk vs SSD... I have all mine on an SSD anyway because I thought, I don't want to wait around for my VR games to load in!

Getting a 1070 arriving today and can't wait to fire up some super sampling on my Vive... Now just need to resist the urge up upgrade to an i7 so that I can even more frames haha.

I have just ordered a htc vive and a gtx1080.

I'm still on a i5 2500k @4ghz with 8gb ram.

I'm going to see how it runs, eventually I will upgrade rest of my machine.

In the mean time, what are some top tips before it comes Monday, in regards to software I can download now or anything I can do to make install/ playing as painless as possible? cheers

Not much you can do really. The setup software takes you through setting up your space with the controllers.
You could download any games you want but thats about it.
