HTC Vive

I've seen people who don't want to drill holes saying they are going to use tripods like these...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/..._rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=577049067&pf_rd_i=desktop

AFAIK HTC/Steam sometimes use something similar when the are demoing the Vive.

Any solution as long as you have 2 corners above head height should be fine, just remember they do vibrate a little so need to be fairly stable.

Yeah. Probably going to end up with something like this, although I'm going to look for ones that are above 2m in height... Perhaps something like 240cm or something just so make sure it tracks me when I lift my hands up.

Edit: Might settle on this if nobody has any better suggestions.

Remember you also need to buy the thread mounts as well, think I'll get these.

Such as, please feel free the past links.

Can't be bothered to find them all, but basically he said pre-orders would not sell out when he actually meant pre-orders would continue even when stock was backed up until July and he also stated the rift would be around $300-400.

Not to mention the countless law suites against him regarding copyright infringements etc.

I don't feel this one is fair. He only ever said it was a ballpark figure, and after saying that they did say they were switching from making it an affordable device to the highest quality device they can. I'd much prefer to get the highest quality device they can make, than an affordable option. This is top level consumer hardware, it's bound to be expensive.

Most of this case was dismissed by a judge in January of this year. The only part to continue is the breach of contract, not the fraud part.

This was a massive under-estimate form Luckey on how many they would sell, and maybe a foolish thing for him to say. He's not a PR guy though, and things like this happen. Is it a bad thing they sold out? They're still taking pre-orders, doing their best to get rid of scalpers, and anyone who still pre-orders, even if it does mean waiting until June, get a free copy of EVE Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale, which is no bad thing.

Thing is he meant what he said and it was true. It was a slimy play on words. He literally meant pre-orders would not sell out... not Oculus which he fully expected to sell out due to the Oculus inferior manufacturing compared to HTC.

Even if he did mean that, which I still think is a semi fair comment due to the fact the pre-orders get free stuff thrown in, who cares? They've not taken any money no matter the way it was ordered, so cancelling is an easy process. Vive took money on Paypal orders and who knows how difficult it'll be to cancel once the money has already gone on a pre-order.

I think maybe you are trying to make excuses for him? You think it was a semi fair comment? Really? He got people on board to buy a rift not realising their order would be backed up. And it isn't easy to cancel. Easy to cancel is a button on your account saying CANCEL, not writing multiple emails to get the item to be cancelled. It's actually easier cancelling a gym membership than getting your item cancelled from Oculus. There is no explanation on HOW to cancel and no cancel item in the basket once your order has gone through.

I had to write an email which I sent FROM the email that was listed on my order and then had to reply to ANOTHER email with my name and address etc. I had less of an issue getting a refund on Gears of War Ultimate from MS for crying out loud.

To be fair, I think I sent three emails to get it cancelled and the whole process was done in about 3 hours start -> finish. It's hardly a massive ball ache.

I'm not making excuses for him, it's just how I see things. People when pre-ordering could see the expected ship time when they stared their order. Mine said March, but due to the site getting hammered, and me reloading the page, it eventually said April after about 15 minutes. I could have not gone ahead with the pre-order at that point if I so wished. It was maybe a stupid thing for him to say, that they would not run out of pre-orders as people are likely to take it as 'if I pre-order I will get it on day 1', but he's technically been correct, as the Rift is still available for pre-order with included free games, likely to happen if you order all the way though to the 28th of March. After that date it will no longer be a pre-order and will simply be a backed up order and who knows what it will come with at that point.

As I said, they've not taken any money either, so there is no fight to get money back. Could they make the cancellation process easier, yes. But it's not too difficult to send a support ticket to cancel it, and that is mentioned in the FAQ.

I am not a Rift/Oculus fanboy, and I think Luckey has been a bit naive in his comments and said things he shouldn't, but I just can't see a massive issue with what you've talked about, except maybe making it easier to cancel if people wish to. But that said, sending a few support ticket emails is hardly the end of the world.

Palmer said it in an interview, cant remember the link off the top of my head but Oculus said they invited HTC to have Vive support added to Oculus SDK and Store but they declined

Thats interesting is it because they (valve) want to keep everything on the steam store? (not wanting to divert or give presence to another outlet)

For me both of these devices are peripherals ie monitor/viewing devices (albeit with custom control methods) so how software is going to be coded not to work on one yet work on another is a tad annoying. Its a bit like having 2 monitors (one gysnc and one not) and only the gysnc one will play Battlefield 6, GTA 6 etc. Thats a crappy example (hey its early)

yeah, of course Valve don't want anyone using anything other than Steam store - its funny that reading around I mostly read anti-Oculus stuff coming from people and saying that its the Vive that is trying to be "open", but comparing that to the official statements that have come out, it looks more the other way round to me

Oculus seem to understand that right now everyone needs to be doing everything they can to grow the market and get people to adopt VR in all its forms, its way too early to start trying to lock people out of stuff, but because a game is a timed exclusive to Oculus STORE, people think that means Oculus want to lock everything to their hardware

yeah i know that each are wanting to keep the sales within their respective domains (=they get a cut). Can't blame either. Should that stop the potential game being released on other storefronts?

Question:
If a developer wants to release a game for the oculus rift what do they have to pay to oculus? And are they allowed to release the same game on the vive?

Similarily if they want to make a game for the VIVE, does it necessarily have to be on steam?

atm - with the rift anyway it seems a stop n start process for developers because of the changing sdk (introducing varying limitations)

The Barnacles vid was well timed and gave me more assurance I was going to have some fun with the Vive at least.

Anyway as I had a free day yesterday I made some space in the spare room to give it a proper test when it arrives. There was a only single pine bed in the room but seeing as I've been using it as a build area for the last couple of years I've stashed it in the loft for now and took the old mattress to the dump.

On a whim I found some Holodeck wallpaper suppliers online :)

Pre-ordered an HTC Vive and waiting for my new GTX980Ti based PC from here - having tried Elite Dangerous on one at EGX it was impossible to resist :)

Was interested in the stuff below, is it confirmed that the base stations have threads on the base as well as the back as the images only show the back - or this solution wouldn't work?

problem is movement afaik, I've been told by people who are heavily involved that movement inside VR is not tracked as well as people would like and as such something as little as 1 in 10 people can actually play games where you can freely walk. Many games are opting for a fixed point teleportation system and obviously the other big games have a focused fixed point (project cars, Elite Dangerous etc)

Apparently it's just very hard to get the acceleration right for the brain to process it without people getting dizzy. There is no modulation so you kind of run at the same speed I'm sure we will over come this problem in the future but for now it looks very unlikely. That's why very few fps are in the pipeline, everyone thought that would be the big thing but found out it is very very hard to code. You can't just put a camera in the game, (well you can) but it won't work like you want it to.

Minecraft is supposedly coming so it will be interesting how that works.

From what I've heard from initial reports, a lot of people were getting sick playing Minecraft, so it will be interesting to see how they solve the sickness issue.
