HTC Vive

Another issue: with the Vive disconnected, the Vive program crashes on startup every time (does it really need to run and crash when the Vive is not connected?) plus now my monitor goes black for a few seconds every few minutes or 30 seconds or so.

Will try re-installing drivers but it's very annoying.

Thanks for reply, guess it will be Display port to Vive Box and no audio on its headphone jack then.

Pity Graphics cards only ever seem to have one HDMI, although I did see one that had an extra internal HDMI port specifically for VR so its lead could connect to a front port on PC.

I run mine through display port and get sound through headset

For some reason when i Shut-Down my PC the SteamVR software seems to forget about the USB drivers it has installed, however when i boot the PC up it doesn't attempt to install the drivers again.

I've found that removing the USB cable from the box or PC does nothing, however unplugging the power from the breakout box, leaving it for 5 seconds and plugging it back in results in the PC installing all the USB VIVE drivers again.

Not tested this yet, however my VIVE breakout box is powered from the same gangway as the PC, so gets power when i boot the PC up. I'm thinking that if you power the PC up first let it boot then apply power to the breakout box it may solve these issues.

OK seems to be a compatibility issue between Vive software and my Monitor software (Benq Display Pilot) - they do not seem to play well together. It's fine on two other monitors.

This is a right pain, monitor will now go black, seemingly at random, could be once every two minutes or once every five seconds! *Expletive*!!

I have another camera problem. Tron mode work, but room view in the steam menu doesn't show straight away. 20sec later, or sooner it appears next to the controller. Was working fine for days...not sure I've changed anything...

This is not good, my gaming monitor will now go black every ten seconds or so because of the Vive software. What about when I'm NOT in VR Vive?

I've tried re-installing gpu drivers and monitor software and disabling the Vive pc client at startup - what else can I try?

You uninstalled vive software etc? Tried a different cable/port at either end?

OK uninstalling the Vive software fixed the problem, so it seems to be the problem.

The problem doesn't seem to be the main Vive app that runs on startup, I think it is this one:

HTCVRMarketplaceUserContextHelper.exe

It was set to run on startup but even when I disabled that, it re-enabled itself on the next startup. Very spywarelike. Naughty HTC, bad HTC. I don't want to have to re-install all the software every time I use the VR.

Anyone tried Half Life 2 on it yet? Back on the DK2 it was the only game to really give me much motion sickness, and even then not that extreme. On the Vive I get almost none. Really fun to play, but I hope they can implement the controller soon.

What do you need to get it running?

I'll paste the intructions from reddit:
SteamVR Beta isn't necessary actually, Half Life 2 beta is.

I imagine it could be done on a devkit or Rift CV1 as well, it isn't reliant on anything Vive specific. From memory, this is how I did it:

In your Steam library right click on Half Life 2, go to properties, and switch to beta in the beta tab. Let it download if it needs to.

First, make sure you do not have SteamVR open, otherwise it will try to start it up in desktop cinema mode. What I did was start it up and then start SteamVR. However you can also just disable cinema mode in the properties for the game or the Steam settings, I just didn't know about it at the time.

Start up Half Life 2 beta, and in the options, enable virtual reality. If I recall correctly it will want you to restart the game, so restart it. In SteamVR make sure you untick direct mode (edit: in settings, devices dropdown), run in Extended instead.

Now what I did is started up Half Life 2 again, and then started SteamVR, and then clicked enable virtual reality in the main menu screen. You probably don't have to close SteamVR beforehand as long as you make sure it doesn't open in desktop theater mode.

That is how I got it to work. It was kind of finicky for me doing it the first time. Also make sure not to mess with the resolution options, but if you do and it stops working, delete the config.cfg file in /Half-Life 2/cfg/config.cfg and it should be fine again.

EDIT: If it isn't working, or you have a black screen when in-game try and delete the config.cfg file in /Half-Life 2/cfg/config.cfg

You do not need the Vive software installed. You only need Steam.

Brilliant, I just assumed the vive software was needed. That's great as it is causing conflicts .

Will test later in VR room v.2 (now that the wife is back and the living room has been returned to an archaic couch + tv room).
