HUB: Intel 13700K vs AMD 7800X3D

this is even more remarkable if you consider 7800X3D is making 4090 work 10-15% harder. GPU is doing more work, using more power and delta is still massively in AMD favor

On reflection i think on this occasion @Bencher has a point, the 13700K would only draw that much power if it was fully loaded up, it pulls up to about 260 watts in heavy threaded workloads, with the memory also being so heavily overclocked it would exaggerate that delta, a very overclocked IMC can draw a substantial amount of power.

I will say also this, shader compiling and overclocked memory or not a power draw up around 300 watts or more is utterly ridiculous, especially in this climate and this seems to be ignored, Bulldozer was relentlessly ridiculed for pulling 140 watts at most in heavy MT while never being more than 30% slower in games than the same generation i7 pulling 95 watts.

This is WAY beyond that.

My 12900k was pulling 150w during the shader compilation test though. That's with 7200 ram. I don't think 270 is very accurate.

I'm the first person that admits the 13900k consumes a truckload during gaming, but 270w is absolutely bonkers to even suggest.

Not bad for £25. AMD offering more performance at much lower power use and a better platform with future support.

I doubt Intel will care at all as this isn’t going to make a noticeable difference in sales. It’s a nice win for AMD though and they will probably appreciate picking up the extra sales.

Nvidia’s features do offload a lot of work to CPU cores. Maybe Nvidia has found a way to load up the P and E cores heavily.

Might be interesting to see this test with an RDNA3 card.

Overclocked the 12900K can pull over 400watts… You already know this we’ve had this conversation a dozen times now…
400? I'm sure any cpu can draw as many watts you can cool, Intel or amd, so yeah, a 12900k can pull 400w, just like any other cpu can pretty much. You haven't discovered America.

Whats the point of all of this? A theoretical endeavor into how far you can overclock intel cpus? Quite far, that's one good thing about them

Ryzen isn’t going to pull anything close to power of its Intel equivalent, as this test shows.

I’m not sure what you’re point is but it’s not relevant in the real world.

That seems weird, the difference should be much bigger. Both my 12900k and 13900k idled at 2 to 2.5 watts. How much do you see on your 13700k?
It only seems "weird" if one always believes their own parochial experience is always the norm. ;)

My CPU is overclocked to 6.2Ghz boost so my idle is slightly higher but even when the 13700K is at stock the lowest idle I'm seeing in HWInfo for CPU Package Power is 7w and the average seems to be nearer to 9w. My 7800X3D idles around 20W and overclocked 13700K idles around 10w.

AMD being 2-3x better that Intel for power use and heat has become the norm.

Performance per watt is the last reason anyone should buy Intel over AMD.
