I was googling Bruce Lee v MMA fighters the other day to see what the general consensus is about how well he would have fared, most people saying he wouldn't do very well.

Anyway, as Google does, it links you to other things with some connection to your original question. This was the question sent to me, it's from Quora. Also, who would have thought a croc can outrun you.

Could an MMA fighter defeat a chimpanzee in hand to hand combat?

Here is one of the main answers, it's quite fascinating and I just wondered what people here think. There are of course contrary responses from people that think it's a bit exaggerated and based on early research that apparently doesn't hold as much water today.

"No. Not a chance. Not one man. Not two. Maybe four large men but they'd get the hell bitten and scratched out of them and their only chance would be to sacrifice limb, and probably life of one or two, and use their weight and size, if possible, to immobilize the chimp. Even then I'm not sure they could.

They would be severely injured at the very least, and that's assuming four, not one or two. I've spent a fair amount of time observing chimps up close in the wild and my first wife worked with them for years at a major zoo. They will tear you apart.

You have no idea of the speed and ferocity with which they attack. Humans are no match for most wild animals. A crocodile can outrun you on land -- yes, a crocodile. A small wild pig can kill you before you know what is happening, and a full grown male chimp, even a female, will tear you apart.

It will rip your arms off, tear the skin off your face, scratch your eyes out, tear your windpipe from your neck.... It won't feel your big punches, trust me. The speed and ferocity will terrify you and render you helpless.

You will instantly go into a defensive freeze as you try to fend off this unimaginable strength and unrelenting attack. You will **** your pants as you die. Can I make it any clearer than that? Forget your martial arts. Forget your tough guy act. A chimp will expose you as the puny human fraud that you are no matter how well trained you think you might be."

Chimpanzees are far stronger than an average human, but they aren't trained in aggressive fighting. It would probably do well against an MMA fighter though.

As for Bruce Lee, he basically invented MMA. He ditched the rule book and created a fighting style that was far more effective, and abed on real life fights on the street for money. He was a huge proponent of strength training. He was happy to learn whatever techniques and tricks that were effective regardless of which martial art they may or may not have originated. he took a methodical scientific approach to training, and to developing a fighting style.

If you put him ina time machine to the present he would have done OK but surely only comparable to good MMA fighters, nothing special. If he was alive and training today he would be one of the best without a doubt and would go relatively unbeaten. Every skill that a modern MMA fighter posses that is proven to be viable he would have learned, and perfected. Few modern MMA fighters show the same level of power-to-weight, speed, agility, dedication to training, dedication to finding the optimal fighting system.

You can't take what Lee did in his movies as a demonstration. He was classical trained by a master of Kung Fu to the highest level, so could do the fanciest show pieces for the films. His actual street fighting style was very different

I recall a documentary on chimps where it was stated that a male chimp is about seven times stronger than a male human. The italic answer is a bit dramatic but I imagine a chimp would hurt a person pretty bad

They have instinct instead, which is faster. I wouldn't pit training against it, especially with the ludicrous mismatch in strength and agility.

As for crocodiles, you'd just need a bit of distance. If they don't get you in the first rush, you can outrun them. They're quick for a very short distance. I wouldn't care to have to try, but it should be possible.

Best cancel my plans to go kicking off on chimps in Africa for my summer hols.

Thanks, you’ve just saved my life.

I’ll see if I can find one young enough for me to beat.

There are videos on YT of one guy taking on around 5 and winning, a single punch here, a single punch there, I would imagine even 10 vs a chimp would end badly but not for the chimp. One swipe and your demobilised if not dead. Now if they had a suit of armour...

Not a chance in hell a human could beat a chimp. Humans rely too much on thinking, whereas animals are pure instinct in that situation. The split second a human takes to think between a block, punch or kick the chimp is already on him pulling his arms and face off. If there's any videos on youtube showing anything else, the chimp ain't trying.

They are strong but they aren't as strong as people say. Plenty of people stupidly keep them as pets around the world and face issues when they hit puberty and get aggressive but rarely does it end in a fatality or major injury.

The silly thing about these 'What if' scenarios is that a chimp could quite easily lose its appetite for a fight and run after receiving a blow or it could double down and relentlessly attack and put the MMA fighter in a position where MMA is of little use.

Chimps are about 1.5x stronger per lb of bodyweight than a human, they aren't killing people with one swipe of their hand lol. They aren't Silverback Gorillas which weigh 400lbs and can fight Leopards with their bare hands.
