Hungary Grand Prix 2011, Hungaroring Circuit - Race 11/19

i cant remember where on earth i got this from, but i remember hearing from somewhere that the reason the mclarens were so pants at qualifying, then were amazing in the race was because the Mclaren rear win has very good downforce, but the DRS effect is quite small compared to the other teams.

am i just talking out of my behind, or is this why the mclarens have been doing poorly in qualifying pre nurburgring. if im right, then hamilton is in a fantastic position to win the race

That is indeed postulated as one of the many reasons. The movable plane on the McLaren wing is much larger than the RBR one which is tiny. What that means is that when open the RBR one dumps lots more drag compared to the McLaren one. That is very advantageous in Qualifying when you can open it whenever you like. In the race you can only open it in designated areas so that advantage is nullified somewhat.

This looks like its going to be good, however I will be expecting more from button tomorrow as I have money on him :D

I thought if I did that my good luck would rub off on him haha.

Also, Alonso put in a poor Q3 I feel, if Massa can get those times, then Alonso should be beating them based on previous merit.

I can't see Button having the race pace or more importantly I guess, Mclaren doing well enough in pitstops to keep Button in track position just incase he could keep people behind him.

Realistically, Hamilton will pass Button if he got ahead from a good start, he's done it time and time again, I can't see Button passing Vettel, I think Hamilton/Alonso were basically 3-5 10th's down on where they should have been and Alonso will easily have race pace over Button and better overtaking ability.

I think Button's got best of 4th in him, unless RBR have another off race in pitstops, same goes for Ferrari really. I doubt Massa will have better race pace than Button however if he gets lucky with the right pitstop and gets ahead of Button, yet again I can't see Button being able to overtake.

webber was just over 0.6seconds off the fastest qualifying lap in each session and similar lack of pace in practice, can't see him doing very well, though being the straggler in the top pack often lets you do a Button, also known as being so far behind and having no one threatening you, you can mess around with strategy, pit early, or stupidly late, into the right clear air at the perfect time.

Hamilton, Alonso, Vettel, Webber, Button, Massa...... useless cars.....

As soon as Murdoch gets involved with the sport we start to have drivers websites hacked. [/immature]

Very glad that this has turned out to be a load of **** though. Hoping to see both Mclaren drivers fighting each other during the race, allowing Alonso to get through and go on to win. :D

Didn't see the qually until last night (was at Bedford hooning/being hooned all day :D). Fantastic to see Button get his qually right and get up the top. Just hope the Mclarens have good race pace now. Massa did well too there.

Drivers? who else apart from JB?

That was a glorious qualifying, I love when you just don't know who is going to get the pole until the last moment.

I thought Vettel did a great job, pulling it out the bag at the last minute, I'm not his biggest fan, but you can't deny he can pull a lap together at will!

I get the sense that the track doesn't suffer heavy handedness lightly, both Alonso and Hamilton stepped over that fine line on the last run and the track bit back, this may be indicative of a pirelli/track combination that might suit Button/Massa in the long run as their style might just come good on this track..

I'm predicting a Vettel/Button shoot out with Alonso close behind. Hamilton will unfortunately push the car too much and suffer tyre issues which cause him to either make a silly mistake or go slowly backwards.

so
Button to win
Vettel Second
Alonso third (Mainly helped by Massa moving over obligingly on the first/second lap)

I'd love Hammy to pull one out the bag, his hope lies in being able to get the softs to work immediately and might pull out a stormer in the last stint..
