I can't get to sleep

OP I suggest you get used to it... And get used to the grumpiness in the morning from lack of sleep and from hearing "but you had 8 hours sleep last night!"... No I had about 5, the rest of the time in bed was trying to get to sleep...

Drink less caffeine. Leave a larger gap between eating and sleeping. Get more exercise.

Doesn't work...

I've "suffered" from this for 20 years and the only time excercise works is if I'm totally knackered... IE spending an entire week skiing and sleeping 4 hours a night... Or an entire day of running and climbing... A piddly hours jog here and there does nothing.

Go to bed 1 - 2 hours later.

That doesn't work either... All that does is delay your sleep by an hour or two.;)

Get a morning paperround. You'll be up early so tired at night.

Or just get to the point where you're so nackered you can't function properly... Or just have to go to bed two hours earlier to get a reasonable amount of sleep...

In the summer my general go to sleep time is about 3AM, in school time where I get up at 7, I try to get to sleep at 11. On the night before the first day of school I don't sleep at all. Normally I get to the point where I am so tired in the morning I suddenly feel awake again. (although my brain is a bit slow) I spend the first day knackered, get to sleep at 11 that night and stay with my sleep pattern so I am always tired.

If you aren't already tired, don't go to bed. I find that if I go to bed when not tired, I don't get any more tired and take forever to go to sleep. Pull an all nighter and sacrifice tonight to be able to sleep well tomorrow and for however long you go without staying up till a silly time again.

I have always had the same problem, never want to sleep when I have to, the only way I can fall asleep in a reasonable amount of time:

Don't eat anything ''heavy'' on the stomach (at least) an hour before sleeping.
No stuff like cola, or anything with a lot of sugar and caffeine in it for that matter when wanting to sleep.
Alcohol ( not an option for you I guess), about 2 or 3 hours after drinking I get so tired, when the alcohol wears off I get a wave of tiredness.
Not being too hot in bed, make sure you don't have a too thick blanket, fresh air, always sleep with window open.

Most importantly:
Don't worry or ''think'' ( as in crunching or thinking deeply about stuff) about anything, don't think about the next day, about crappy situations, about something hard next day like a test. Most people ( who try to clear their mind) think about calm situations like the ocean or a field of grass or their breathing, for me, the only thing that works is focussing on sex (as it makes me forget everything else), but focus on anything that relaxes your mind/takes your mind of your daily crap and forget about your worries.

I have trouble sleeping I'd often stay awake for days which would make me mentally ill with anxiety. I now go on youtube looking for all kind of relaxing stuff from massage videos, reflexology to simply relaxing music. I found watching things like Indian head massages would relax me by just watching them.

Listening to documentaries whilst trying to fall asleep is also very good (for me at least). I find the tone very soothing.

I disagree, if you are not tired and therefore can't sleep then staying up later will either give you the correct amount of sleep or leave you more tired for the next day where it will be easier to sleep, rinse and repeat until you have reached sleep equilibrium.

If you are tired and cannot sleep there is something medically wrong with you and you should go see a doctor.
