i dont hate steam!

Before doing Krugga's more extensive list, I would do this:

Reinstall steam over the existing copy, and try running and launching games.

I had problems like those you described, when i first moved from XP to windows and just copied my folder across. This fixed it.

If this solves your problem, each game you have installed may need to be updated, which will happen the first time you try to launch them. So don't panic if you get a popup about game being installed when you try to launch one.

  • OP, go to your Steam folder and delete everything except the whole steamapps folder and Steam.exe (Application).
  • Now run Steam and let it rebuild itself.
  • Make sure that you've got Steam Guard enabled in Settings.
  • In Settings click on CHANGE... under Beta parcipation and choose Beta update.
  • Let the Steam install the latest build and restart.
  • Run any games you like and if you have any problems with the game, right click on it in Steam Library -> Properties -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
  • Use crap cleaning software like CCleaner to clear temporary files and registry on your PC.
  • Defragment your hard drive where you have Steam installed using Windows inbuilt tool.

i have started this process, just running steam after deleting files, steam is trying to update now, but is hanging around 4% now, i guess i can put that down to all the steam servers being busy

edit: it was struggling to update just before i deleted files

right.... i have managed to log in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! woo!!!

is the best way to integrate my steam apps just to copy and paste? or is it worth downloading them all again?

Are you managing to login consistently now?

I'd copy the games back, if you get verification errors with them, you can always validate or just delete them then. With the current speed of the content servers thanks to the sales, I wouldn't throw all you've already got certainly.

i managed to log in a couple of times, copied the games across, tried to play portal, had problems, so validated game, played again, all seemed fine, thought i would delete the clientregistry.blob for good measure, opened steam, it updated again, performed a system restart to test again, just logging in now, its not going as fast as the previous coupel of times, but fingers crossed it will make it

No need to delete clientregistry.blob if you followed my steps correctly.

Just do what I posted earlier and all will be fine, verify all games afterwards and you're good to go.

Don't complicate the simple things :)

You might not be able to log in to Steam because of the servers overload so don't always assume it's a problem on your part.

the program is showing as not respondign every now and again in task manager, its struggling with something?

It might be that Steam isn't the issue here.
