i dont hate steam!

I would spend the time trying to sort the problems with your PC that will lead to fixing Steam. But that's just me.

I'm coming in at 4 pages gone here. But would it be worth recording whats going on using fraps, uploading it to youtube and showing us exactly what is going on? Would give a much broader view from our side.

i am a fairly competent user, tell me what to do or look for that hasnt already been mentioned. or please feel free to ask me for more detail on operations i have already performed

ok, this is new, helps to narrow things down a bit!

sll other internet access is fine, windows firewall is disabled, windows anti virus is disabled, no third part antivirus is installed

edit: i tried connecting in offline mode, but got a message saying cannot connect to steam servers due to problems with my internet or the steam servers

go in to Windows firewall advanced settings find Steam in the Inbound rules and delete it and restart steam when windows comes up say allow access

second go to your routers login page which will be something like 192.168.0.1 all the details should be on the side of the thing like login info ect ect
Go to port forwarding and add those ports I gave you a few pages back that steam uses to make sure its not that.
And yes it can be a intermittent problem.
You might as well try it, it has worked for some users

if none of the above work it might be sky a few other users have had connection problems with them

Had another idea go test your connection on http://www.speedtest.net/

firewall was disabled, and had previously run speed test (sorry forgot to mention that!).

Anyway, i am pretty sure the problem is now solved, i will not hold my breath just yet, but i have been trying to break it now for over an hour but cannot! got my firewall and antivirus back on.

My probloem was Bit torrent! it is interfering with steam some how, mainly the btdna.exe part of it. i had the system setup so Bit torrent would start automatically when i boot the system, during my steam fault finding i would close bit torrent to test, but i did not realise btdna was still running in the backgroud,... so i disabled that and steam works perfectly!!

fingers crossed this is the last of my problems with this issue.

id like to thank everyone for their efforts in assisting with this problem, you have been a big help!

:) :) :) :) :) :)
