Obviously if it was a lost cause then its a bit different. But this sounded like the owners just didn't fancy a big vet bill

Really?? How do you know that. Does the OP know exactly what has been said to the Owners? They might have come to the conclusion that the poor little blighter might have had a really bad quality of life post any operation.
