I got me 3D printer, awesome!

Well after a super long weekend or some would say short week in Barcelona I managed to get a app on my phone to capture some things and then printed one.

Autodesk 123d Catch is not bad .. tho I have lost some scans not sure why but they are just done .. but manged to get a nice one printed and its worked out well

Just doing a bigger version .. hope I have enough plastic on the spool .....

anyone else used it ?

Never used it but it looks good. How about showing us your print?

Hey all,

Finally finished my 3D printed Star Lord Element Gun from Guardians of the Galaxy, really happy with how it came out.

3D Printed Project #1 - Star-Lord's Element Gun (Part 3)

James.

I got to play with an Ember printer today. The definition on it is crazy. It prints such tiny features too.

What printers are you guys running? I'm on the lookout for one, was waiting for mainstream printer prices like Ultimakers to come down but they never budge! Want one for architectural models, my friends got a cheapo one from China but hes not having much success with it at all.

I'm running a Printrbot Metal Plus with dual extruders and also have but currently not using a Printrbot LC (old one made from laser cut ply wood)

I also backed a kickstarter for a delta style printer made by a UK based company called NFire Labs (going to a beta testing event in the next few weeks)

Got an example of the thing you would be printing?

Also check out my blog for reviews on filaments etc, just done my first video review (Needs a LOT of work, lol)

James.

I use a Leapfrog Creatr at work. It's a pain in the arse. It often does 10 hour runs, sometimes 20+ hours, so if anything goes wrong, there's potential for a fair bit of waste PLA. The last week it's wasted nearly a whole roll of material in duff big prints, with problems ranging from too much friction in the filament feed tube causing the extruder to stall, to a random 10mm X axis offset (which it didn't repeat the next time), to, well other things I CBA to detail.

The friction issue has been overcome by resituating the spools to an overhead holder made from a piece of cardboard tube, some duct tape and a pair of book ends. The random offset, well, I can't work that one out.

It's good when it works though.

Thanks for the info guys, I will check out your blog James. I havent got any samples as I'd have to model them from scratch to simplify schemes for printing. I work on mid sized projects, commercial, industrial and bespoke residential so it would be a varied mixture.
I already do 3d videos for clients on request, I just think the next stage would be a nice little model to give them.

Hi James, spent some of last night reading through your site. Some useful information on there, keep up the good work ;)
Reviews of filaments is really useful info, good to see some UK suppliers now.

I've got a XYZ Duo 2.0A. It was a pain in the ass to get it printing good until I found the bed\extruder sweet spot.
I don't use XYZware as it's crap. I now use simplify3D.

If I get brave enough I will go with a single E3D extruder mode.

I have the XYZ at the top of my wishlist at the moment, mainly due to the competitive price and good reviews. Any good for a printing noob?

ouch, looks good but pretty pricey. Has it already been released, or just reviewed only?

It's an English company so support will be good. The E3D extruder is the one to have. Lets look at the cost.

If you buy a XYZ 1 or 2 that about £500 Inc. Add to that a resetter that's another £50 so you can use any filament.
And you have to block XYZware from the net. If you get a XYZ with a high firmware number
you're stuck with buying XYZ filament which is not cheap.

The XYZ can only do ABS\PLA :(
The Big Box can do the lot including flexi filament. Parts are very cheap and easy to install.

I was beginning to look at the Wanhao i3 duplicator, I'd actually kicked the XYZ off my shortlist. Have to admit the build size of the BigBox makes it very tempting to wait it out.
The more reviews I read of printers the more confused I become. Its like they all get equal great/bad reviews so hard to know what to go for.

Read up on what kind of filament they can do. And then do a read up of the E3D V6.
How much are the spares? E3D V6 extruder is £40 and so on.
