Check out sla its more than good enough for a lot of things. Even normal printers are good enough for a lot of model making/hobby. Its just the higher the resolution the more expensive.

We recently bought a Leapfrog Creatr at work. When it's functioning correctly it is quite impressive and is useful for prototyping tooling for producing test pieces. However, it's pretty craply made and needed several mods and repairs pretty much out the box.
Our child company has had one for less than 6 months and they already have had to replace it as it died and is BER.

and a 5 axis CNC router
Oh, and a panel saw for slicing down full size sheets (12" blade)
And in my real job I play with a much older one of these:
LAthes are perfectly fine, but not a tool for the untrained, much like any industrial machinery. More than capable of removing arms, fingers, etc.
One of the biggest risks is people trying to wear gloves, or jewellery like rings. What you get with rings is something called a sheathing risk. Imagine it. Fear it.

Makes more sense to have a community 3d printer but a really quality one that can make up new car parts or something extreme like that. Seriously useful in somewhere remote and desolate I guess
Think I'd prefer the cnc if thats where you can feed it a cad model and it does it for you

Just a heads up, if you're thinking of buying a entry level 3D printer stay well away from the Cubex Trio. It's an attractive looking unit but the build quality of the printer is rubbish. You'll spend more time fixing it and calibrating it than you will printing. I have put countless hours into it and only have a handful of models to show for it. The bundled software is proper rubbish too
Im still actively 3D printing things, mainly just bits about the house, dish-washer detergent door catch broke recently so i measured, modelled and printed a new one within 30minutes.
Im currently more "into" laser cutting and etching which is pretty damn fun and being an engineer I'm constantly being inspired to make mechanically bits and bobs, laser cut gears are my current pass time.

Yup I am still printing stuff.
Here is a watch I made the other day for fun.
Still use it as part of my job, and it is invaluable along with the laser cutter.
BTW I got a new laser cutter here, loads bigger then the original one, which is now in the loft!

I picked up an ultimaker 2 a couple of weeks ago, and pretty much been flat out printing ever since, certainly not a plug and play affair, but easy enough if you have a bit of common sense!
I love the fact I can either download, or just fire up solidworks and make just about anything I need. Mind you, I'd say 25% of my initial prints have been for the printer itself, like loose filament holders, etc..
What does everybody else do with theirs?

I'm just printing random stuff from thingiverse at the moment, but i want to start having a go and making my own stuff. I love the idea of a laser cutter but the 3D printer was expensive enough for now
Nice watch, lol. Again love the idea of a laser cutter one day.
I've mostly printed little useful things and print upgrades. I've gone to a bowden set-up with printed parts and just finished printing a case for an LCD display for the printer.
I'm currently getting quotes for a case to be laser cut for the printrbot to go in.
I'll post some pictures of things at some point.
