I HAVE PROOF THAT WITH WINDOWS 10 FREE UPGRADE IS CRAP

True. But sure why that would be more difficult except that more people will be doing it, so might be more delays. A motherboard switched was what caused it for me in the past.

So if doing this - I reinstall windows 7
Do I need to download updates and SP1?
I just do a install within windows 7 to upgrade from my windows 10 disk?

Cheers

as others said download the ISO and run the setup from within that, will upgrade you to W10 :)

indeed, and that was my concern that I was posting about in the big Windows 10 thread, so essentially all Windows 7/8 to Window "FREE UPGRADES" become OEM licenses that you cannot just bypass the activation - as you don't have a key at all.

What happens to win7 key when you upgrade? Wondering if you could go back to 7

W10 activation goes by the hardware as when I did clean install of W10 I didn't enter a key at all but was activated once on the desktop. when I entered my W7 key during W10 install it stated it was invalid which is why this stage was skipped.

I did a clean install on a spare hdd to try it out, it didt ask me for a key, but every now and then a block of text saying windows not activated popes up on desktop and when I'm watching movies on kodi. I like 10 and plan to upgrade in the future. If that makes my retail 7 into an ome 10 well I'm going to feel like I've just bent over and let ms do unpleasant stuff to me.
Hope that's not the case if it is hope someone cracks it like they did for sp2 on xp

I can confirm that Windows 7 reinstalled okay and activated and then Windows 10 upgrade worked okay and activated again.... Many thanks :)

Well this will prove interesting for me. I went from windows 7 to windows 8 when the £25 offer was on. Then to windows 8.1 and through to 10. Now after windows 10 being activated my motherboard has decided to die on me. I've ordered a new one from ocuk, so will windows 10 not activate with my new board? Sorry if I missed anything.

Nope.

You will need to reinstall 7/8 first and do the upgrade again.

I'm not sure the old key I had for windows 8 will work though? Can I use a placeholder key to install windows 8.1 then upgrade to 10? What a headache.

It will work but you'll probably have to install 8 first, upgrade to 8.1 then 10. Unless 8 keys work with 8.1 now, can't remember.

With the latest media from Microsoft you can install Windows 8.1 Update 1 with an 8.0 key. Then upgrade to 10.

The previous £25 upgrade offer would actually be a better deal for enthusiasts. At least then we would be able to change hardware and perform a first time clean install. Free isn't always best.

The £25 upgrade offer is for Windows 8 isn't it? How does that make a difference for Windows 10?

Unless I'm missing something!

Yes, that was my point. A similar offer would have been a better more flexible option for Windows 10.

Currently there is no way to upgrade to a full retail licence without buying a whole new copy.

For me, its fine as i only have a laptop at the moment and i wont be upgrading anything on it. Its those with Tower units that are stuck. Ruddy MS! They like to grab grab grab!!
