i just got dead space 2 but i'm so disappointed

Not sure how I've missed this thread but I'm certainly glad I found it! Gareth you are an inspiration and it looks like you're going to get your wish granted which is fantastic news :) Let's hope that developers take note and implement this feature in future games. Good on you!

Hello gareth170

Are you the same guy who went to Evo last year playing Street fighter with your head? I heard story about you but I never got there and never found any information regarding to that person. So just here trying my luck.

Also, pretty damn cool how you manage that. Have you considered including your mouth or use some eye tracking as mouse movement instead of using your chin like openEyes?

My company already contribute to a charity who work with individuals who are disabled who want to express themselves and play games despite the various complications involved. They create systems that are tailored to the individuals needs and it's extremely rewarding to see it pay off.

Great charity and I definitely agree that EA need to listen to this petition.

Signed.

I had a read through that http://www.specialeffect.org.uk website that was mentioned earlier, that could really be useful for you Gareth, it looks like it is aiming for a similar outcome, more so in the peripheral/software route too

I am sure I can hook this up for you Gareth. We provide funding to them and I know Mick (who runs Special Effect). When I am back in the office tomorrow, I will speak to them and see whether we can get something sorted. Last time I was with Special Effect, I was demo-ing some of the specialist equipment which they build unique to each individual. Whether it require kinect style motion or even eye co-ordinated controls, they adapt the systems accordingly. Really impressive, but it's an expensive process...which is where our funding comes in.

I am trying to participate in as many events (10km runs etc) for fund raising outside of the funding we provide as a company, as it truly is a fantastic cause.

Here is the email I was sent by him the other day after we did a 24 gym challenge - between only 40 of us (many non-gym goers!), we did the mileage from Bicester to Barcelona as a fundraiser :)

Excuse the pimping, it's all for a good cause:

Fundraiser for Special Effect

Webmart's charitable trust fund

Webmart's sponsorship of Special Effect

I thought you might be interested to see a video of Alex, a young man who is benefiting from the loan of the second eyegaze system that Webmart kindly donated.

Alex 18 years old and has spinal muscular atrophy. He is unable to go out of the house so the computer is his lifeline. Up until trying out the Webmart eyegaze system, Alex could only his voice alone to control the computer, as he is virtually paralysed. Unfortunately, because of his condition, Alex has been finding it increasingly difficult to speak without becoming very tired. Also, there were lots of games he wanted to play but couldn't.

However, as you'll see from the video, eyegaze is proving to be a huge success for him, and enables him to play the games he loves best online, such as football, so that he can now compete with people from all over the world.

Anyway, I'll let Alex speak for himself...

On behalf of Alex and all of those who are benefiting from the support you have given to our work, thank you once again to yourself and all of your terrific colleagues

Ripcord tbh, it wouldn't be needed. If everyone who posted in this thread donated like £2-£5 each, he'd be able to get something made easily from the fund. I'm sure most people would be willing to help him out if it came down to it.

It depends if there's a company which could make exactly what he needed. I hope there will be.

The company is the charity Special Effects, believe me they have some really impressive solutions which can be tailored for each individual. I have posted more above :)

We should do this kind of thing more often.

Overclockers humanitarian arm :D

It's very rewarding. We do it at work.... pick a cause and all get together to sort it. That could be helping someone moving houses....through to me getting my car stuck in the snow, 8 people rallied to help me out!

It's amazing how powerful the internet is though, especially with a community the size of OcUK and the connections within.

Alright I have sent an email to the bbc (hope this is okay gareth?), and also posted on the article recommendations, although my recommendation was about the length of their articles. :D

I can post the email up here if you wish, for you guys to critique my failed grammer :)

Hi, Ive got cerebral palsy aswel but I can use my hands, but still have probs with playing game ie. Cant press a lot of keys at once or in quick succession, so at times it gets frustrating playing FPS games

The worst type of games for me to play are racing games, as these games are my fav, but I can only use the keyboard and as we know racing games and keyboard are not great. I have a wheel but I cant really use it as I cant use the pedals, and using a button on the wheel, for the accelerate and brake isn't any better then using the keyboard, as you have full brake/power or nothing at all. a joystick/joypad is too sensitive, so I cant really win, no matter what I use..

Ive just thought, meny years ago, I had like a flight wheel, and that worked quite well as I pushed the wheel in for accelerate and pulled it out for brake/reverse. I wonder if that would work on the new flight wheels you can buy now??

I think, as long as the pushing and pulling on a flight wheel is still included, then it should be. I'll admit I don't know a lot about flying and flight sims, but if those are common uses then it would provide an axis which you could, in theory, still assign to accelerate and brake as you did with the old wheel.

That's probably a question that one of our flight sim enthusiasts might be able to better answer, though. :)

I think I can speak for all of us about just how breathtaking the support from OCUK and other people connected with gaming in one way or another has been. Marvellous responses from those working in the field of sensory technology etc, and as others have pointed out, the power of the internet and the community cannot be underestimated. :)
