I want a mint 205 GTi - Tips?

I got my 1.6 GTi about 3 weeks ago and it cost me £1200. It is in pretty much mint condition apart from the drivers seat needs replacing, as does the drivers seat belt. There's a small bubble of paint by the rear arch but other than that the paint work is superb condition (it's been garaged all it's life) and there are no dents in any of the panels. Engine wise it's got FSH and only covered 70k. It's a 89 (G) and I've not seen many in as good condition. For me the 205 was all about the ownership so I'd rather have a stunning 1.6 than a faster 1.9 in lesser condition and I don't regret buying the 1.6 one bit.

Oh and get over to http://www.205gtidrivers.com which has a coupke of useful buying guides as well as some 205s for sale.

ok not exactly a type r no :) but imported tegs really dont go for much though, a friend snagged one for 4k, yes it didnt have a hand built engine but he still had the hondata ECU Modification done to give him over 190bhp, still a fantastic fwd car

1.6's are for girls :p

the 1.9 is for the men!!

As much as i love the 205 GTI you must be out of your tree to spend 3k + on one, 1.5k will get you a very very nice example no need to spend such a stupid amount on an old little french hot hatch.

They are good cars and are even faster than most of the hot hatches made today. Sure they can cost a bit to maintain, but that's all part of the fun. :)

hot hatch supermini's maybe, but most regular modern hot hatches today have over 200bhp and go like stink, but without the go kart like handling.

If anyone can find a mint Turbo Technics in sorrento green or black I have cash waiting :)

16v may be the better option but I've always wanted a turbo 205.

1.6 handle better too, has a better gbox, and is better for the track............ and i used to own a miami blue 1.9 :/ wish i kept it now

It is when you only have a 'puny' 115 :)

Anyway, wondered well OT. Hope you find a decent one westy, there are a few about if you look hard enough and whichever you decide to go for I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I've only got about 85bhp at the moment, but its perfectly adequate. It suprises a few people when they see an F reg 205 :D

Having driven many, many examples of both, the 1.9 is a nasty harsh engine, although it can't half shift if you can be bothered to extract the revs from it. The 1.6 is a much sweeter, revvier engine. It has smaller wheels which make it feel far nimbler, smaller brakes which are better in balance with the car, and doesn't feel so over-tyred.

I'd pick a sweet 1.6 over the 1.9 any day.

What are your opinions of the 1.9 wheels on a 1.6? Looks wise, i think they look great :)
