I want a mint 205 GTi - Tips?

Nasty. I didn't fall asleep, just had one of those horrible moments where you feel like you're about to have an out-of-body experience...hearing goes funny, you go into a sort of daydream and then suddenly *WHAM* I came rushing back to reality, looked at the road ahead and just thought "There is no way in hell I can get round this bend"

I hit the brakes like a kid on a BMX and ploughed straight on.

It's mad, if I hadn't have braked and just carried on without taking any action I wouldn't have crashed.

I don't drive when I'm that tired any more. I pull in and kip as soon as I feel drowsy these days.

I still prefer the drive of the 1.6 though :p although my 1.6 currently wears 1.9 wheels because I happen to have a set of 1.9's with good tread on 'em. The 15" wheels do look nicer mind.

Yes with cars you always end up learning the hard way.
I know it sounds bad but I’d sooner be intoxicated than exhausted while driving, of cause I'd do neither :o

might even knock a little off if you dont wont those aftermarket wheels. I'm sure he could pop them back on flebay and make a good bit back from them. hold up why not do that yourself :) sell them to some nova boy for an inflated price.

no defo bargain that 1.9

nice find lopez

How do people feel about them as daily drivers?

If we get one it will have to sit on the driveway as the garage is taken up with my scoob.

Checked insurance for the GF and the difference between her boring Astra 1.6 and a funky 205GTI 1.6 is £6 - bonus!

Mine's fine. It's a bit noisy and the manifold tends to blow when it's cold for the first few minutes (they nearly all do these for some reason) Of course it won't ride bumps like a modern saloon will, but then a modern saloon won't corner or bring a grin like a 205 GTi will.
I get about 300 miles to a tank and I drive quite enthusiastically - I like to run it on Optimax when I can as it seems to use less of it and runs better for it to boot. The steering is very heavy when it comes to parking if you're used to PAS but it's so small you can park anywhere anyway.

The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of security. Mines immobilised and krooklocked but it still bothers me that they're very easy to break into and attract thief attention.

Great!

It actually makes the drive to work enjoyable, rather than being a chore. Clearly not the most luxurious of cars, but I think they're ideal for a short commute.

I like the 1.9 engine, as it'll pull at almost any speed, in any gear. Combined with an agile chasis, it's just right for nipping (safely) in and out of traffic.

Mine went back on the road in September after a restoration, and I've driven almost every day since. I kept the suspension upgrades sensible: slightly harder rear beam mounts, slightly lowered on Eibach 7001 progressive springs, and OE spec Bilstein gas dampers. It's made it even more 'chuckable' now, but has kept an acceptable ride.

Go for it! You wont be dissapointed :)

Your Topaz looks so much better after the rebuild, I was reading your old threads on 205GTidrivers. Is the paint holding well on the bodykit?

Very well.

I used it on all the interior panels as well as the majority of the bodykit/bumpers, and I've only had trouble with one of the rear arches, but I had to use a different product on that, due to some previous damage.

I've also used it (Halfords Flexible Vinyl Paint) on several PC components too, including my mouse, which shows no sign of wear despite 2 years of daily use. I think I can safely recommend it ;)

There have been a few good 205 Gti's on ebay recently for good money! I'm not into all the aftermarket alloys though, and would put the 15" speedlines back on.

Lopez, how do you think white speedlines look on a white gti? I'm thinking about getting mine done.

damn that brings back some memories of our old one :(

one thing tho... ours was a g plate limited edition model like that, but ours had grey carpets, how come that one has green carpets ???

The carpets should match the colour of the paint, putting those pictures through photoshop and adjusting the colours has made the carpets look light green. They are much darker in the flesh.

Neil.

Neil.

the carpets in ours were definately grey, not green in the slightest.

A lot of the later 205 GTI's had grey carpet regardless of colour. Very boring :( Some Miami blue 309 GTI's have a blue carpet too.

but if that ones a special edition, and ours was too, then how come they didnt both have the same colour carpets and door cards? ours was a G 1990 so should be quite an early car.

Did yours have grey leather to match grey carpets and grey door card carpet?
And PAS and a sunroof? If so, it is one of the original "Special Edition" (300 of each made, Sorrento and Miami)

Looking closer at Neil's mums car it has black leather, which AFAIK was not a feature of the original SE. Problem is by this time that Peugeot were marketing almost every GTI as a limited edition of some sort, including the Atlantic Blue CTI and the Topaz Blue GTI when none of them (strictly speaking) were actual limited editions.

It's all very complex isn't it! :D
