i7 6700k Owners Club

Depends on Ram speed. If you have 4790k with 1600Mhz ram then 6700k with 3200-3600Mhz ram will be 20-25% faster at same clock. Also you need fast GPU.

Really? When I buy memory for my skylake build I plan on getting 16gb so I should get the fastest possible like 3600mhz.

there was a really good overclocking guide from Asus/ROG that I followed when i got my 6700k. It took it straight to 4.6 and I haven't looked back ..for newbies like me it was fantastic and simple and had it all done in no time. I would encourage people who want to overclock to track it down.

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Primo
Mobo: Asus Maximus VIII Extreme Intel Z170

Just playing around with my 6700K now. Having moved from a PhenomII 940 I'm somewhat out of touch :D

I'm just testing [email protected](1.384v in system) on AIDA64, I won't be using anything like Prime etc.

I also have my ring @ 4.7ghz

Temps are around 85c, which is a little high, I know. I have to re-do the thermal compound on my Predator 280. What temps should I be expecting at [email protected]?

RAM is running at 3000, 32gb over 4 sticks, I know this is potentially limiting.

I have left everything else at stock on the CPU as I really have no idea what I'm looking at, haha!

If you guys have any pointers, I'd love to hear them :)

I was running 4.7ghz @1.384V I think ring was 4.5 or 4.6GHZ, memory at 3200 with 2 sticks and I peaked at 64 degrees (I have 2 240 rads). It was hotter initially (about 70) and dropped in temp with use.
This was using realbench

Late to the party i know, but might as well join up :)

Just didn't think Kaby was worth the extra money. The z270 version of my board was an extra £80!

So i bought a 6700k, asrock z170 gaming k6 and 16gb of corsair ddr4 3000.

Happy as i could just re-use my trusty old noctua nhd14 cooler which i think is still as good as anything else on the market.

Got it clocked at 4.6ghz at 1.27 vcore, temps hitting around 70c on ibt.

It may not be night and day better than my old 2500k setup, but it's a nice jump all the same.

You will notice the biggest difference not in games or everyday use, but in specific task based workloads, like photo editing, video encoding etc.

I find the 6700K is considerably faster at encoding video than the 3770K was at the same 4.5GHz.

Yes, i have noticed it benches much higher on cinebench. It's definitely a very superior cpu, although my general usage probably won't see its full potential.

Have to say i am particularly impressed with the asrock motherboard.

I was a little dubious about asrock as i always viewed them as a poor mans asus. I went for the gaming k6 as it had the 8 sata ports i needed and i wasn't prepared to pay an extra £80 for the hero. But the gaming k6 is a great board. Well worth the £135.

Probably better off going x99 if that's where you do most tasks though.

Not for me, I'm mostly a gamer/photo editor, so this offers the best of both worlds and bang for buck. I just so happen to edit videos from time to time, which is where it comes in handy.

I did consider x99, but I'd have been looking at another £150 on top. Didn't think it was worth it for my usage.

Thought it was definitely worth going i7 this time though. Games are now starting to use the extra threads.

Why didnt you go for 7700K + Z170 board then.? I't would cost you the same and you could expect a higher overclock.

Two reasons:

6700k was only £300 where as 7700k is £350 most places. I knew this would be the case.

Also i wanted something to build and tinker with over xmas hols and couldn't be bothered to wait. Especially as i already knew it was just skylake running a couple of hundred mhz faster.

Put it this way, i have no regrets not waiting for kaby ;)
