i7 6700k Owners Club

Hmm what CPU would you guys recommend then? I've ordered a 6700k already, but can easily return it and exchange for something else. I have been out of the CPU loop for at least 24 months as the 3770k (4.5GHz) has been powering through without issues. I saw the 6700k was the top model, did some quick review searches and decided to order.

It will not be for gaming exclusively, it will mostly be for photo editing as my 3770K does show its age especially when exporting large numbers of RAW files.

My GPU is a GTX 980. which I have no real issues with in games at UQHD resolution.

I'm still thinking the 6700k was the right choice, like the 3770k, it should last me several years, but am open to suggestions based on the above criteria. Mobo is a Gigabyte Z170, with 16GB of 3000MHz.

Well i have a overclocked 6700k at 4.5gkz, and mate has a 2500k at 4ghz, and i have like 1% performance boost over him in games, few games he had even more fps than me, both 780ti, but i have 16GB ddr 3000 and he just has 8GB ddr 2133, mind you, some ddr 4 slower than ddr 3 even.

Plenty of benchmarks showing the 6700 destroying the 2500, I guess you don't play popular games.
 
I've just joined the club

Sold my X58 Xeon rig that was my Recording Studio PC and built a silent 6700k micro atx rig.

I tend to leave the pc on quite a bit and the X58 was a power hog.

I actually have like about what i call 64 AAA titles installed, but we only tested games that had a benchmark built in, like Batman Arkham Knight, F12015, Dirt Rally, Unique Heaven Benchmark, Batman Origins, and we both had like the same results, must admit i was expecting to beat him easily, even thought my 6700K maybe at fault, but done the The Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool test and passed with flying colours, maybe i see a difference in CPU intensive games, but he dont have Arma 3 like me.

EDIT: got it wrong, my friend has a 4670k is that better than a 2500K then.

If we are talking pure gaming benchmarks for 4670kvs 2500k then most I have read indicate between 5>10FPS per title when overclocked @4.5.

I have also looked at some Benchmark comparisons between an 2500k @4.5 vs a 6700k @4.5 and im some cases (again gaming benchmarks) there are some significant improvements for FPS averages.

Although I will admit my reading has not been super extensive but I dont think i am "ill informed".

yeah I hate the noise as well. I run the standard fan profile of the bios making the fan spins to around 1700rpm during Cinebench. Temp max recorded from cinebench R15 was around 70. This chip is quite nice, it does 4.5Ghz core, 4.4Ghz cache with 1.16v (bios), 1.168v (cpuz) for Cinebench R15. :D
 
Just done binning 10 new pieces and these 2 are the best of them.

1. X610B309
4.5Ghz core - 4.4Ghz cache - 3000Mhz ram / 1.16v bios, 1.168v during cinebench.
4.8Ghz core - 4.6Ghz cache - 3000Mhz ram / 1.335v bios, 1.360v during cinebench. Temps max 73.

4.5Ghz core - 4.4Ghz cache - 3000Mhz ram / 1.185v bios, 1.2v during cinebench.
4.8Ghz core - 4.6Ghz cache - 3000Mhz ram / 1.345v bios, fluctuates 1.360v-1.376v during cinebench. temps max 75.

Here's the details on mine, for science.

4.7Ghz @ 1.344v, 72c max temp on air. Bios settings are 1.35v and LLC, level 5.

A few notes. Under load it flicks between 1.328v and 1.344v, I've tried reducing the voltage further in bios, but it becomes unstable. The same goes for adjusting LLC. It passed 12 hours of Overclock.net's x264 stability test at the above settings. Core 3 is 10c hotter than the rest of the cores under load.
