i7 920...who is still enjoying its awesomeness

Well Mr mjones, why does your comment not surprise me and yes its just a thread if you are going to do a job do it right or not at all > merging the thread the wrong way.

They've done it to me a couple of times when my thread was about something completely different - concerning the same item :(

Never mind eh' :p

Had my 920 D0 since launch and still going well.

She has been overclocked all the time @4.2Ghz underwater.

An amazing CPU, definitely the longest I have ever kept and no real reason to upgrade.

Handles my 7970's in X fire no problem.

I am planning on upgrading in the summer to a 3930K as I would like something different to play with. But it will be a big upgrade along with a new case aka 900D!

:)

I think they did it purely on timestamps. Perhaps that is there standard approach.

Maybe I could ask them to re-title this one?

Still running my i7 920 but it is being crapped on by planetside 2 (game coding issues not the actual processor) it seems that planetside's code sucks and is heavy on the CPU and light on the GPU so its bottle necking on my CPU currently.

Plus i have the upgrade itch so I am thinking upgrade might be soon and move to fully watercooled system in a corsair 900d.

Still rocking my i7 920 D0 Stepping (Nehalem) bought Sep 2009 for £182.60!!.

Been rock solid @ 4GHZ for the last 3 and a bit years!! Or though recently have noticed that CPU is at 100% usage all the time despite having all the correct step down options enabled in the BIOS, going into Power Option in windows and resetting the active Power Plan back to default settings seems to sort the problem for a while some maybe its not the CPU's fault.

Might upgrade when Haswell is here!?

What vcore are you guys using at 4ghz? mine is slightly unstable at 1.3v going to try 1.32v or so.....it seems 3.8ghz to 4ghz is a big voltage increase needed.

It will vary with each chip as some are better overclockers than others, 1.32Vcore for 4.0ghz is about right in the Bios, just up the Vcore a step at a time and test.

If you get the BSOD it will give you a error code you can check the error code below to see were you need to increase the voltage, take your time.

Common BSOD Error Codes for Overclocking
0x101 = increase vcore
0x124 = increase/decrease QPI/VTT first, if not increase/decrease vcore...have to test to see which one it is
on i7 45nm, usually means too little VVT/QPI for the speed of Uncore
on i7 32nm SB, usually means too little vCore
0x0A = unstable RAM/IMC, increase QPI first, if that doesn't work increase vcore
0x1A = Memory management error. It usually means a bad stick of Ram. Test with Memtest or whatever you prefer. Try raising your Ram voltage
0x1E = increase vcore
0x3B = increase vcore
0x3D = increase vcore
0xD1 = QPI/VTT, increase/decrease as necessary, can also be unstable Ram, raise Ram voltage
0x9C = QPI/VTT most likely, but increasing vcore has helped in some instances
0x50 = RAM timings/Frequency or uncore multi unstable, increase RAM voltage or adjust QPI/VTT, or lower uncore if you're higher than 2x
0x109 = Not enough or too Much memory voltage
0x116 = Low IOH (NB) voltage, GPU issue (most common when running multi-GPU/overclocking GPU)
0x7E = Corrupted OS file, possibly from overclocking. Run sfc /scannow and chkdsk /r
BSOD Codes for Sandy Bridge
0x124 = add/remove vcore or QPI/VTT voltage (usually Vcore, once it was QPI/VTT)
0x101 = add more vcore
0x50 = RAM timings/Frequency add DDR3 voltage or add QPI/VTT
0x1E = add more vcore
0x3B = add more vcore
0xD1 = add QPI/VTT voltage
“0x9C = QPI/VTT most likely, but increasing vcore has helped in some instances”
0X109 = add DDR3 voltage
0x0A = add QPI/VTT voltage

You may also want to give this other article I wrote a read if you are wondering how to disable auto restart after a BSOD.

PS: another member put this guide up, l just copied and pasted it, so he should get the brownie points.

I keep on getting random BSOD's (in relation to the OC of my 920) , I think Ive got a ropey Gigabyte UD3R? mobo.

Looking forward to awkward conversation with MS shortly from moving my Win 7 HP licence from one machine thats no longer used to this one (hadnt realised the licence I was going to use was an upgrade only before I formated my hdd :()

Im also gettting frustrated with all the add on carp you get forced to take with every driver / app download currently. Not only the frustration with having to un-install it after, but also the added time these apps add on to the initial d/l /set up time. Im pretty good at catching some of the ****, but some still get through.

I vote for "I dont want any of the added ****, I just want what I originally requested" link on every d/l page (:

Hi, what is the error code you get when you get a BSOD, with a bit of luck we could solve this problem. If you don't now check > c:/windows/minidump, if l remember rightly and post it.

Still got my i7 920 at 4ghz been under water for about 6 months but had it almost 3 years so not bad.

No current need to upgrade as only on 1920x1080 and never go bellow 60 fps all in all probs the best chip i have ever purchased.

Glad I looked at this thread, will this be a good upgrade from a q6600 3.2ghz will need new mobo and ram but I can find that cheap on eBay?

Thanks for the quick reply my 4gb of ddr2 ram need upgrading anywa after that it'll be my ageing amd5850 that'll get changed then nice crisp ultra settings of bf3.

Depending off course on what gpu you replace the 5850 with, the i7 9** cpu's will be a great choice. Using a gtx 670 with my old 920 at 4.2ghz i was able to max it out with an average of 70fps at 1920x1200. Helps though that my gpu is running a pretty high overclock.

Still using my old 920 on my one and only system. It's clocked to 3.57Ghz and still uses the same 6 GB of RAM I started off with. I only changed the cooler because I got one for review.

I probably will continue using the system as it is until either until I can justify an upgrade based on how my income is looking at the time. Of course upgrading CPU means a new motherboard, RAM and things so it's not a cheap upgrade path.
